What to have at home for post-op?
I am getting down to the last couple days before my surgery- ahhh!! And I am starting to freak out a little bit, I just want to make sure I have things ready at home for next week. So I already have many different kinds of protein shakes/powders, broths, crystal light mixes, liquid tylenol- what else do I need? The one thing I wish I owned is a recliner- so many people say that is the only place they can sleep for awhile and since I am a side sleeper it will be rough. thanks everyone for all your help and support!
I can't tell you how much I LOVE the "Magic Bullet". It makes shakes really easy and you can add things to make it taste better/different.
I would hit Vitamin shoppe and get some "Nectar" brand protein powder. They have flavors that are really good. Most companies do a Vanilla or chocolate, but Nectar has a Pina Colada, Cappacino, etc. And at Vitamin Shoppe, if you don't like it, they will take it back without a fuss.
I really didn't have any pain after I was discharged. My wife didn't either. I also would load up on SF Jello Pudding, especially Pistachio. I think the pudding is better since you use skim milk and can get some protein out of it. I would also get some Anywhey. They carry it at GNC. and other stores. If you add it to the SF Pudding, you will get about 25 grams of protein per serving.
Best of luck to you!

As Liz said, don't do too much stocking up as your tastes WILL change. The soups I stocked up on early on are still sitting in my pantry ;-(
I would make sure that you have enough nonfat milk, plain greek yogurt, broths (vegetable, beef, and chicken) and protein powder... BUT don't buy too much of any particular flavor/type of protein powder. If you can, get the smaller sizes so you can figure out which ones you like. I found that I was not a big fan of AnyWhey unflavored, and that the creamsicle nectar (which i expected to LOVE) turned me off totally. I liked the cherry nectar and chocolate Matrix. Given those two as bases, I could make pretty much anything I liked.
The greek yogurt can be used exactly as you would use sour cream - think of it as a big nonfat punch of protein. Add a big dollop to chicken broth and add spices to taste to make a cream of chicken protein soup that tastes awesome, for example. Or mix it with some SF da vinci syrup and sf fruit jam or preserves to make high protein, fat free fruit yogurt.
I second the vote on the Magic Bullet. Don't know what I would have done without it - I stll use it daily and count it as one of the best investments I've ever made! You can get the kit at Costco with a ton of accessories for around $50 - $75 (i don't recall exact price, but it's very reasonable).
The other thing I'd strongly recommend is the Wii Fit if you can manage it. Even if the weather gets rough, you can use it to move and keep movement FUN... it becomes a great motivator and especially early out you can get a good workout going on it. My personal favorite is EA Sports Active, which you can tailor to your level of fitness and work on progressively to see your progress.
And an iPod loaded with good, fast tunes that will help you keep moving... walking, dancing, stretching, whatever!
But don't stress... you'll be doing just fine and will be able to adjust your plan and shop and get out and do things really quickly after surgery. It's not like you have to buy everything for the next 6 weeks because you'll be laid up.
Good luck!

I tried not to stock up too much on the protein powders, just ordered some samples from different companies. I have never tried the greek yogurt, but I hear people really like it. I wasn't sure if that was allowed for the 1st week post-o*****t. And yes I have the magic bullet- that was a good christmas present to receive!!
I have been wanting the Wii fit for awhile- hopefully I will get that soon and I love to listen to my ipod when I work out!
I know I need to realize that I will not be stuck in the house for too long (hopefully!!)
Thanks!!
Be careful with the liquid Tylenol---folks have dumped on it because of the sugar. I used the Jr Tylenol Meltaways and had no problems with it. (Store brand is cheaper and works just fine.) You can order sample packets of protein on vitalady.com. Good way to try protein without having to buy a big jug of a flavor. Good luck on Monday!! We're saving you a seat on the losers' bench!!!
Julia
Thanks Julia for the info about the liquid tylenol!! I didn't even think of dumping from that! Do you know if those Jr Tylenol meltaways were on the list for the recall? I guess if I get the store brand it doesn't really matter either way. I have a couple different brands of sample packets of protein powders. Thanks- right now it doesn't seem like monday can come quick enough!
