Been away...kicking this off!

Hi,

it's been ages since I've read or posted here.  My life has been so consumed by Lyme disease that I have not had a lot of energy to spare.  I've been mostly too sick or in too much pain to get much exercise.  When, with pain meds, I manage a good walk, I'm on the couch the rest of the day!  It's hard.  I've gained weight.  Mostly for no good reason...I've read that this often happens with Lyme.  Not sure what that's about.  Probably affects the metabolism as it affects nearly every other system in the body.

Of course, lack of exercise doesn't help.  And the last few months, my eating has gone to hell, so that has added to the problem.  Bored eating.  That is, as I lose the ability to do so many things I love to do, I find myself snacking more.  :-(

I just started with a new specialist yesterday and she's really on the ball.  Along with new antibiotics, she's got me on a regular course of B12.  Wow - that's something you don't know you're missing until you get it back!  She also talked about making my system less hospitable to the Lyme by cutting out sugar, white starch, and dairy.  So, here I go...again!

I'd like to post my eating here each day, to keep me accountable in a public way...and maybe to get some encouragement?

I've done without sugar and white starches before; I can do it again.  Cheese will be...a bit harder!  She also wants me to cut out my diet soda...again, I've done it before, but that's a tough one.  And even cut out artificial sweeteners...I don't see the possibility of this any time soon, but will try to cut back with an eye toward eventually eliminating.

Today, I've had a cup of tea with a dash of skim milke and splenda, a protein shake, protein bar, and some edamame.  And not enough water yet, but working on it.

I've got chicken breasts to cook for dinner, probably with green beans and brown rice (which I believe I'll skip this time).

Hope everyone is happy and healthy.  Good to see you all!

Lisa,

Welcome back!  I'm sorry to hear about your ongoing battle with Lyme - few people realize how overwhelming it can be when it becomes chronic, and just how many of your body's systems can be affected.  Sounds like you're working with a really good doc, though, and that can make all the difference.

I hadn't heard about the nutritional aspect of fighting it, but it sounds like it's very compatible with the WLS needs, so that's a plus!  As to eliminating artificial sweeteners, you should ask her specifically if that includes the sugar alcohols (like maltitol, erythritol, and xylitol) or just the artifical ones like sucralose, aspartame, and saccharine.  They're very different molecules and have a different effect on your body.   Might also ask whether agave nectar is ok as a sweetener.

As to giving up cheese - that would be a tough on for me! But there are some good soy cheeses out there that are worth a try.  They've gotten a LOT better over the years since the first ones came out.

Good luck and keep posting!  The "Sticking to the Basics" thread is where some of us post our daily food plans.

Thanks very much for the support, Karen.  She may have specified which sweeteners are worse; I'll have to ask my husband - Lyme messes with the memory too!

I'll make a point of posting under "Sticking to the Basics."

Lisa, welcome back and best wishes as you strive to recover. The dietary guidelines were fascinating to read- so much like the WLS guidelines.

Hope to hear more about your progress.

Lisa,

Glad to see you here!  I am so glad you have a new doc who has a lot of insite for you!!!

I think posting your meals is a GREAT idea - and at least M-F we normally have a "back to basics" post which is our menu post - so that will probably aid in giving you a place to post your meal plan

You know you have all the support possible here for anything and everything!

Welcome back Lisa! Have never had to deal with anything like Lyme disease myself but it sounds dreadful and I'm glad you've found someone who is finally helping you with it. You'll get back to good eating - when you feel lousy that's the last thing you want to think about, but as you start to feel better I bet your eating improves as well. As for exercise start slow again - walk when you can - maybe break it up into little walks? I was off the exercise wagon for a while too and I'm getting back into it, but I have to build back up to where I was and I don't have an excuse!

Take care - welcome back - and best of luck kicking that disease.
