Hi!

Surgery went well! I woke up in a world all my own. lol But they quickly put me in the world of narcoticland! Morphine wasn't cutting it for me so Dilaudid was my friend.

I did okay at first but when it came time to walk, the nausea hit me pretty hard so they had to take care of that with some meds. This set me back on the liquids but I was able to catch up and get discharged in time so that I did not have to stay an extra night. I was happy about that. I had some sort of tubes in the ceiling above my room that made terrible noises throughout the night as though bags of laundry or dead people were being dropped down chutes at all hours of the night. Not pleasant on top of being poked and prodded half the night. Ugh.

I have been doing pretty well with my intake I think. I am on full liquids till tomorrow when I move to my pureed stage. I am getting in about 30-40 grams of added protein power to my liquids in addition to what is already in them. My liquids intake is at about 40-50 ozs if you count everything I take in (considering it is all liquefied). I am taking the b12, a chewable vit 2X a day and my reg meds. The calcium was not advised for a while until I see the the urologist again for the stones. I am peeing okay, 3-4 times a day and not very concentrated.

I do have a question tho... I feel really weak. I mean pretty badly. I am also kinda dizzy and that does not make walking feasible. I am not sure what I can do to alleviate this. I have been trying to add more to my diet by increasing my portions but as the consistency thickens, that wont be long standing. Is this dizziness something else or is it a normal phase? It is really the only thing that has me a little down. Otherwise I am in very high spirits!

Thanks everyone! And ummm, slide over cuz I made it! ;-P

Welcome to the bench!

The dizziness is from the good drugs that they gave you in the hospital and anything you are taking at home. Keep going with the fluids and it will get better. Also try and walk around as much as possible even if it is up and down the hallway in your house where you have something to lean on. Just be careful and take it slow!

Congratulations and welcome to the loser's bench!  Glad to hear everything went so well.

I know that for the first week to 10 days, I was really "weak" - taking even a short walk exhausted me and I got dizzy pretty easily.  Part of that was just the after effects of the anesthesia and part was the adjustment to a dramatically different nutritional intake than my body had been used to for 40-something years.  It got noticeably better every day, though - so if you're seeing it get worse or NOT getting better, then definitely have a chat with your doc about it.  If you're still on pain meds, try cutting back or eliminating them - you're 6 days out and should be doing pretty well without them by now, and they can do all kinds of things to your balance, memory, appetite, and digestive tract.

As Liz said - keep walking and keep sipping - the walking is CRITICAL at this point to help  prevent blood clots as well as to kick-start your metabolism.  If you're not up walking, make sure you're doing vigorous leg exercises while seated - stretching, pointing and flexing, tensing and releasing, etc. and maybe even toe-lifts  and knee bends while standing and holding on to something.  Gotta keep things moving!

Good luck and keep us posted!

Thank you so much, both of you!

I have not had to use much of the pain medication. It's not easy to do that with young children around anyway. lol The discomfort is really improving. I still have a lot of discomfort pulling internally under my left side/ mid belly region and of course the drain is an irritation on my right side but that comes out tomorrow, thank God! Ugh.

The dizziness seems to be getting better, a little bit. I can tell my stamina is definitely not there. I can not walk a mile on the treadmill even if I wanted to. Just do not have that energy to spare. I am more a "lightweight" too, so the lack of energy and not bouncing back kinda bums me out. I think I am being too hard on myself. But, that's me.

My follow up is tomorrow, I am anxious for that!

Thank you so much for the feedback and the support. It truly means more then you know!
