Unsweetened condensed milk?

I really want to make a Paula Deen recipe to be WLS friendly but it calls for sweetened condensed milk, can you buy that as unsweetened? I also saw a post on another site that said unsweetened would basically be evaporated skim milk, is that true?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, you can buy it in unsweetened form... you can also get fat free condensed milk (which is evaporated skim milk).  I've always used the unsweetened variety, preferring to sweeten things on my own. ;-)

Thanks for the answer, Karen, I was interested in seeing who knew anything about it.  I never really used sweetened condensed milk for much of anything, let alone looking for unsweetened variety.

What do you do?  Add splenda/malitol to the recipies?  How much?

Instead of complaining that the rosebush has thorns, be happy that the thorn bush has roses.
