uggh here I am 3 days into my liquid pre-op diet and craving any type of food!! and wondering if i will ever be able to eat anything again!!! I just need to keep reassurig myself i will eat again! also did everyone start their pureed foods on week 2 after surgery? does anyone have trouble with certain foods a long time after bypass?

Yeah - Days 3 and 4 were the worst for me on the preop diet. S/F Jello was my friend - at least I thought I was eating something.
I was on liquid for the frist week after, then pureed transitioning to soft over the next few weeks. So far, my only issues are if a eat too fast, or take that one bite too many.
hang in there - it's all worth it!

thanks mark! I know I just need to keep thinking of the end result, but "taking" food away from a person just like that is hard!!!! lol I know Dr. Rogers is great and I feel more confident going to Hershey. Were you just in for 2 nights? Also did you have a drain after surgery? I am nervous about being able to drink enough liquids/protein after the first couple days- I guess I will just take it one day at a time!
No drain - Dr Rogers told me that if I woke up with a drain it was due to something out of the ordinary happening.
I was in Wednesday and back out by lunch time friday. I was moving a little slow but not bad at all. I was on IV pain meds for the first full day then switched to liquid. by the end of the weekend, I was pretty much done with all pain meds. Really - my only pain seemed to be gas.
Liquid and Protien will be a challenge for awhile - I'm still working through it but the plan we were given spells things out pretty well. I used to drink water by the gallon before surgery - now I work hard to just get in my 8 glasses a day. for the first week or so, you just sit in a chair and work on sipping.

My surgeon required a 10 day liquid diet prior to surgery - one thing I found (and it was recommended by someone out here) was to buy GOOD low-sodium canned soups and strain the juices off that and have it instead of broths or other watery stuff - it had a much better flavor and really felt like I was getting something substantial - the first few days were the roughest, but after that it went pretty smooth - and I lost 13 lbs in 10 days - not a bad reward all things considered!!
Your 'head' is the one thing torturing you right now and you really need to work through that prior to surgery - most surgeons have a 'plan' you need to follow following surgery to work your way back to solid foods, and for your sake and the sake of your new stomach you HAVE to follow this. Besides, after your surgery you aren't going to be physically hungry for a very long time - your mind may tell you differently, but that's just head-hunger and you can fight that.
I'm almost 2 years out and yes, there are still foods I do not tolerate well so I stay away from them - I also stay away from things that tend to swell - sugars - and leftovers. Trust me, I'm far from perfect in following my plan, but you will learn as you go along that things that you loved before surgery just don't have the same appeal after - and that's not a bad thing!
Good luck - stay strong - ice pops, sf jello, and the good broth will get you through this liquid phase.
