Chap stick.  My lips were crazy dry and I was glad I had it with me.

Pack light for the hospital.  I took a book and some magazines with me but found I couldn't be bothered reading.  I just wanted to rest.  Take shoes that you can slip on easily and that are comfortable for walking as you'll be up and walking.  As for what to have ready when you get home, I would suggest some sugar free popsicles, maybe some decaf tea, broth or cream soups that you like, sf jello, sf pudding.  I got so sick of sweet things that I was happy to have some soup.  You might also want to have some small spoons, like baby spoons, on hand to help you learn to take smaller bites.

Good luck!!!  Let us know how you're doing!!

Ditto the chapstick (I like Burts Bees).

I took some slip on tennies for the walking. I needed the support for my feet on the hard floors.

You can use their gowns or your own PJ's - on day 2 it felt good to put my own jammies on!

Pre surgery at home I went through my cabinets and cleared out ALL the junk food. It's just me and my husband here, so that was pretty easy and good for both of us!

Hi Jenn, The chap stick is a must, sugar free popsicles are great too, it gave me a change up from water. Also make sure the nurses get you up walking, I had to ask the nurses serveral times whenI was going to get up to walk, once I was unhooked I just took slim (my iv pole) and walked at my own leisure, but some of the nurses at Community were not on top of things. Good luck and you'll do great. See you on the bench!

Jenn,

Yes the floor was nice, I walked it many times. The nurses were not the best, the aids were great. I had a problem with the nurses from the first night though and it just set me off for the rest of the time, so I guess I may not of been the best patient.  I ran out of morphine less then 5 hours after getting to my room and laid there for 2 hours before the nurse came in and filled it, the excuse was I was not her only patient and I need to learn to wait ! Had I of been able to knock the crap out of her she would of been on the floor.

The nerves are normal, I was scared to death, then my surgeon was running 4 hours late so sitting in pre opt was hell. I am almost 8 weeks out and I feel great, my only regret is I did not do this sooner, I see my life coming back and the future is looking so much better. Just think of the rewards after, it will be hard but it is so worth it..

Hi Jenn,

I found a bed wedge pillow was a God send when I got home.  It kept my body up on the same angle it was on in the hospital when I put all my pillows on the wedge, it allowed me to be on an angle so that my incisions did not pull or hurt when I slept.

In the hospital, a little pillow to hold against my tummy when I had to move to get out of bed, and when not getting up out of bed I kept it under my arm that had the IV and it helped to keep my arm level and the IV and tape not pulling on my skin.

Chapstick, when I came out of surgery, Gene kept putting the chapstick on my lips because I could not have anything to sip on till the next morning after my leakage test.  I was happy my surgery was late afternoon, so that the drugs kept me out of it the entire first night, and then Gene was right back by my side the next morning armed with the chapstick.

I didn't take any books with me, but by the third day after surgery I could have used a couple books, I'm not a TV watcher, especially daytime so I was bored out of my mind and could have read a few books on my third and fourth day in the hospital.

Comfortable loose pants and shirt to come home in.

Good luck with your surgery...

Ida

and a sippy cup.  I found when I first came home from the hospital that a sippy cup was also a God send.  It allowed me to really monitor how much fluid I was gettting without having pain in my new pouch.

I still use the sippy cup for my protein shakes.  I've found when I take to big of a mouthful of the protein shake it hurts but when I use the sippy cup it limits the amount and gives me the perfect portion that my pouch likes.  All other liquids I'm drinking normally, I am almost 4 months out.
