OT: Spent the night in L & D

So here's the story. About 4 AM Sunday (6DEC09) I started getting all crampy and stuff. My back was killing me and I was nauseous and vomiting on and off all day. I was having contractions, but nothing I figured I needed to worry about. My Braxton Hicks have been really really frequent so I just figured it was more of the same.

Well yesterday my mom called me all worried of course. She was yelling at me to call the doctor yada yada yada. Me, being the stubborn person I am, said I will, later. Well mom wasn't taking no for an answer and drove 45 minutes to my house from hers. I had surprised her and already called and was getting ready to go when she got here. By this point the contractions were about 10-11 minutes apart and getting more intense. Doc said c'mon in. So I went and got there around 7ish last night. They took me into a room and had me pee in a cup and immediately hooked me up to the heartbeat monitor and the contraction monitor.

I was really glad to find out that the midwife in the practice was also on call all night because I had never met the doc going off duty or the one coming on. They wound up giving me a Terbutaline Sulfate injection which really didn't do much except make me jittery and sick to my stomach. Contractions were getting closer together, about 3-4 at this point. My cervix has thinned out, but hasn't started dilating yet. After a lot of talking and decision making on my part, we opted to give me magnesium sulfate through my IV because the terbutaline made me throw up. So they kept me on a drip of that all night hoping to stop my contractions completely. This morning they gave me two different IV antibiotics and an oral terbutaline which thankfully didn't make me sick at all.

The contractions never fully stopped, but they are definitely now only coming a couple times an hour. They gave me a script to take the terbutaline 4X a day. If my contractions get worse again I am to go right back, otherwise I keep my appointment on Friday and they are going to start seeing me at least once a week again. Just when we stopped my weekly visits because we thought I would be okay with Bi-weekly for the next month!!!

I will be 32 weeks tomorrow and they are trying to buy time to at least 35. They did say that if I actually start to dilate with the contractions they won't try to stop them again. But as long as I am not dilating they will stop them as long as they can.

On the plus side she is no longer breech!! She has moved into position. So I very highly doubt I am going to make it to February, but stranger things have happened!!!

Oh and I hate this Terb stuff. It makes my heart feels like it is going to ump out of my chest and makes me shake like I am standing in a walk-in freezer naked. Blah on having to take it every six hours....

not to be rude or funny but didn't they suggest stress tests?  I can remember being pregnant with Heather and had to go to the hospital 2 x's a week to be monitored?

I had an appointment scheduled for Friday already, so they are going to do one then. According to the midwife I will now be seeing them probably multiple times a week for that reason. So they can monitor me and do the NSTs.

I actually just took my next dose of Terbutaline. Felt at least two contractions in the past 1/2 hour before I took it. So this ought to be interesting to see if the Terb even works at all. The midwife was very very good and very honest and did tell me there is a chance that it may not and I may be back in to see them before the week is out. So at least I am prepared for that possibility.

Yup that is what I meant thanks for correcting me.  Have a healthy happy pregnancy.  Take care. Is this your first?

Yep first to get to this point. 2 previous miscarriages and a host of problems. So at this point I will take her however I can get her. She is my miracle baby :-)

Laura, I had similar situation many years back with my oldest daughter (2nd child) and they put me on some little pills that stopped the contractions. . .  it bought me exactly 3 weeks and she was born just fine at 7 lbs. 3 oz., so here's hoping your little girl is not in such a hurry to begin her life here. . .

Hugs, Laureen

wow! Glad that you are both doing OK. I hope that she can hold out a bit longer just to be safe. But @ 32 weeks I am sure that she'd be fine anyway.

Keep us posted!

What an experience. Glad to hear that things are under control at this point. Sounds like your little miracle girl is in a hurry to get here. Hope things go well for both of you.

Thank you everyone. I am anxious for her to get here too, but not this anxious! Though I can't say I would be entrely upset if she did show up now :-)

I am just doing what the miidwife said and taking it one day at a time now. Really listening to my body more than I ever have before. She'll come when she wants to come...as long as she is okay I am okay......
