Fat Question
Good morning everyone,
I have a question, and very interested in your opinions.
I have been getting hammered by a few of my friends that I am not having any good fat in my daily foods.
My feeling is that I am doing just fine with everything I am eating and my weight loss seems to be going smoothly. Why tamper with it.
How important is it to have good fat in your daily regimen, and why? Will it slow down the weight loss?
Please let me know what you think?
Thanks.
Geoff

I don't have a whole lot of added fat in my diet...however...when I sautee something (even veggies) in a skillet or something, i do use extra virgin olive oil. Not much...but some. With cheese...I don't use non fat...and am very picky with my low fat options in cheese because, well, it just doesn't taste right.
Good fats found in things like fish and what not (salmon etc) along with the olive oil, are good for the body and can actually help good cholesterol levels improve. I'm not, of course, suggesting, that you consume large amounts of either one :)
As far as the constipation goes - I have to take colace every day. After trial and error I came to find out that it was the calcium supplements binding me. I did some research and apparantly "less than 2% of the population after RNY have constipation issues with calcium" Well aren't I just the lucky duck?
The prunes also do WONDERS. The pre wrapped sunsweet ones are really good. I normally have about 3-4 of them in a sitting. Like the other poster said - high in natural sugars so be careful when you first start them.

Instead of complaining that the rosebush has thorns, be happy that the thorn bush has roses.

I gotta say "Get out of my head, Pam!".... she captured beautifully everything I started to say. Haha.
I've also got to try the prunes. There may be less than 2% of us who have constipation after WLS, but I sure know a lot of us who do. I take Benefiber every day in my protein shake, take peri-colace "as needed" (usually 1 - 2 / week) and colace pretty much every night. I've also tried incorporating more roughage in my diet (more dark leafy greens). Dr. P also suggested upping my water intake to 78 oz or more (from the 64 recommended) to help with the constipation.
Are the friends who are hammering you nutritionists? Are they familiar with the revised nutritional needs of a WLS patient? If not, they need to butt out of being your "food police" - despite having the best of intentions (hopefully), their advice may run counter to your surgeon's plan and your own nutritional needs. Post-surg, it's really important that WE understand nutrition and our own body's "new" balance and needs and work to feed those needs - not the needs of your "average joe" out there. Sorry to be blunt, but you'll find there are a ton of people who will just love to tell you what you "should" be doing differently - all of whom are simply ignorant of what you really NEED to be doing.
