Long term exercise programs
Did anyone see The Biggest Loser - Where Are They Now a couple of weeks ago?
I caught a comment from Helen, the winner a couple of years back, that the dr. on campus said that they would need to exercise 5-6 times per week for 60-90 minutes to maintain weight loss, since they were once obese.
Now, I DO have weeks where I get to the gym 5 or 6 times. And that's when I think I've had a terrific week of workouts! But now I am thinking that instead of "terrific" that should become the "normal" I strive for (still terrific, but normal can't be 3 workouts a week.)
So after all that rambling, let me ask those of you who have been at this for a while - what is your exercise program? How many workouts per week? Strength? Cardio? Yoga? Martial Arts? Running? What do you do?

My "perfect" week is five 60-minute cardio sessions and three 6-minutes weight training sessions.
This being the busiest time of the year in my line of work had cut into that time a bit, but I find this to be a very doable schedule (for now).
I also freely admit to eating more than many long-term post-ops, and if I didn't, I could probably cut back on my exercise a bit.
Ultimately, you have to do what's going to work best for you, and be honest with yourself about your weight and health.

Lynn,
I don't qualify as having been at this "for a while" yet, but I've been working on getting to the gym 5 - 6 times a week. Generally, I make it 4 - 5 and then feel guilty the other days. :-( Life happens on the other days, but my goal is always 5 - 6 per week. My workouts are generally about 45 mins to an hour. I alternate cardio (treadmill, elliptical, arm bike, rowing machine, zumba class) with weight days (i use the Strive circuit), and try to always include a good 15 - 20 minute stretching session at the end of each workout.
My ultimate goal is to achieve the mindset Shauna described - incorporate exercise as a normal part of your "hygiene routine" every day - you wouldn't leave the house without brushing your teeth, so why would you start your day without exercising? I'm getting there but haven't quite achieved it yet.

Lynn,
I am going to be 2 year out and I also believe that long term exercise is the key goal to keeping the pounds off long term. I will tell you what keeps me motivated to get my hour of cardio 5-6 times a week. I LOVE to eat and have been known not to make the best food choices so I also believe in calories in calories out. I never want to go back and as Norm said I could probably exercise less if I watched what I put in my mouth. You have to do what is right for you but I really believe that ultimately what Shauna says you have to make excercise a part of your regulary "hygiene". Hope this helps you.
