Low Fat buttermilk substitute!

So...   seeing as how lots of us will be baking the next few days in prep for thanksgiving, I thought I'd share a secret!   Buttermilk is so fattening, and really adds unnecessary calories to some recipes.   Instead of using buttermilk...   if you take just under 1c. skim milk, and add a tablespoon of white vinegar, and let sit for 5 minutes....   it acts the same as buttermilk!

:)

not to be a pain in the ass  lol even though I do it so well - but generally buttermilk is low fat -  it is actually the "juice" leftover from making butter - it doesn't include butter itself. I get the fat free stuff and it works great - although I have used your sub in a pinch
OK so my computer hates me and won't let me paste just the nurtitional info here so here's everything lol

Mary,

Thanks - it's great to have this sub in a pinch when I don't have buttermilk in and don't feel like running  to the store for JUST that missing ingredient!

It's a good sub for buttermilk!!!

But I have to agree with Liz....buttermilk is actually one of the lower fat products out there.  The giant by me, actually only has low fat or nonfat buttermilk.  All of the fat that would have been in the product is in the butter...it's the left over stuff from making the butter.

As a non-baker, buttermilk isn't something I ever have on hand. I jotted this down and put with my recipe books. What a great way to sub for something I wouldn't normally buy!

Thanks Mary!

When life hands you lemons, ask for tequila & salt and give me a call!
