I'm  4months post opt ll I have noticed for the past few weeks to month when I wash my hair that their is lot of hair in the drain for me to take out!!!!  when I brush my hair I have noticed  that  their is hair on the brush more then usual even noticed that I'm picking hair off my clothses don't  get me wrong I don't have bald patches , I have thick curly wavey hair. it seems like it's not growing,  it's on the limp side, oily little more then usual, and lossing it. I hope that this stops soon. Dose anyone know how I can stop this or what can I do about this? I hope my hair starts to grow back to.. What is causing this as well?

I know this is really scary but try to remain calm. Losing hair is pretty normal, from the shock to your body and all the massive changes you are going through. Meeting your protein goals consistently should help. There is a supplement called Biotin that some people take I don't know the paticulars but I am sure someone else will post about it. I started losing my hair immediately after surgery and it kept falling out for seven months. I was really scared that I was going to go bald. But my body has found a balance and the hair loss has stopped and it is growing back. I didn't do anything specifically for the hair loss except maybe meeting my protein goals everyday. Just remember your body is going through some radical changes, you may just need to give it some time. Meanwhile take deep breaths. Oh and one thing I did was experiment with different hair styles. Hope this helps. Hang in there. Belinda

First off, don't panic - it's normal and for most people self-limiting.  Mine thinned noticeably from about 3 months until about 5 - 6 months.  It then stopped thinning and is getting pretty much back to normal.

What causes it is a combination of things including your change in nutrition and the medications in the anesthesia, as well as the release of hormones (a LOT of estrogen) stored in the fat you're releasing.  You're probably noticing mood swings as well, from the hormonal swings.

Taking Biotin and vitamin E as a nutritional supplement can help.  Keeping your hair fairly short, not brushing it vigorously, and possibly even spacing washing it a little longer (skip a day or two) all can help as well.

It's my understanding that for the vast majority of people it grows back.  For some, it grows back with more body and/or curl (which seems to be happening to me, too).

Hope this helps!

Ditto to the other two posts.

I hate to sound depressive but the reality is it's probably not going to stop for the next 2-3 months minimum.  It depends on your body.

Increased biotin, and ensuring you are hitting your protein goals daily have been known to help some people.  I was doing both.  In fact, I started taking 2 doses of GNC hair and nails formula (with biotin in it) starting at 2 weeks out (WELL before I started losing my hair)  The hair loss started at 3 1/2 mos and continued, for me, till almost 9 mos out.  Although probably co incidentally - I noticed it stopped when I cut my hair shorter at that time.  I think it was probably that what I "thought" was falling out had actually already "fallen" out at the root and getting it cut and "gone through" just got all the dead stuff out.

Protein goals are definatley important, though, to help re grow etc.

Besides Karen's suggestion of not brushing it and stuff, you can also try not to put stress on your hair...IE....blow drying, curling irons, straightening irons, not pulling it back into pony tails etc.

Hang in there - it gets better!
