A question for us oldies...

I have been having some issue with my sugar. Last night I work up at midnight sweating and shaking needing to eat something. I ate a banana and a piece of string cheese. I ate dinner at around 7:30. Is this normal? I don't like eating in the middle of the night is there a test that I can have my doctor test for this? I am so confused and upset....

Shilpa,

I was having same issue, doctor P said add in more protein, such as a handful of almonds,  a piece of string cheese, she said we still need to have protein every so many hours.  Sometimes I have a yogurt or piece of cheese around 8:30 or 9 (mind you when I was fluffy, I never ate past 7 pm.), now I don't eat a lot, just a little protein.  I can say that since doing what she said, I have not had too many dips in blood sugar.

Hugs, Laureen

yep - I was told always to have a snack before bed. Of course now pregnant I wake up to use the potty around 2am and find myself needing a little something - just a few crackers usually. also - did your dinner include protein and carbs?

Liz,
I did have protein and carbs at dinner time but I woke up sweating I mean soaking wet! Yuck! I will eat a cheese stick around 9 before bedtime. Thanks again!

Oh how I wi**** was harmonal but I just the clearance from my OB and my labs look good. I think it's because I don't eat just before bed time. It was exactly 4 hours since my dinner when I had the episode. Thanks for your advise.

Shilpa, I have been having this issue for about 2 years. I always blew it off. I brought it up to my hematologist. She thinks it's low sugar. She asked me to buy a tester. The kind diabetics use. And she said when I wake up in the middle of the night, check my sugars.

Well I am stubborn and am NOT *****ing my finger in the middle of the night while I am half tired. So instead, I have been trying to have a snack before bed and it's gotten better. So I definately think that what my issue is.

When life hands you lemons, ask for tequila & salt and give me a call!

JoJo,
Thanks for the advise. That is a good idea. My dad is a diabetic and I just did ADA walk and got a free monitor so I will be using it. Worth the try to make sure that's what it is. I think that is what is sounds like.

Shilpa this issue came up at the last Barix meeting I attended and it seemed that once you're almost 2 years out there are issues with eating and our sugar levels dropping. Check with Nan or Shauna because they both seemed very knowledgeable about it - it was something along the lines if you eat a carb (including fruit or something like that) you have to have a protein with it. I have actually noticed this in myself more as I close in on the 2 year mark - if I go more than 3-4 hours w/o eating (weekends are bad because I get busy and forget) I start to feel bad, get shaky and just 'weird' until I get some proteins into my system. But definitely ask Nan and Shauna and they can tell you the specifics.

It seems to be a pretty typical thing after about 18 months.  Thats when it started for me...then it stopped for awhile and has started up again after 3 years post op.  Mine happens during the day, never in the middle of the night.  It's a horrible feeling and I scared the crap out of my mom the other day when it happened.  I need to start carrying something in my purse, as it has happened when I am driving and thats not good!  I try to get some combination of carbs and protein in my mouth asap.
