I've been thinking about getting into medical coding/billing.  Is it worth it?  I was thinking I could do that as a part time gig and keep my full time at Aetna... or switch them around if I liked the billing better.

Well, I used to be an attorney but after practicing for about 6 years I decided I didn't like "the game." So, now I work for an insurance company, split between their Reading, PA and Hunt Valley, MD offices, managing subrogation claims for large loss workers' compensation losses.  One day, however, I hope to be finished with school loans and turn my hobby for photography into something more.

I'm the Assistant Director of Career Services at Elizabethtown College.  Basically what that means is that I'm a career counselor and meet with Freshman-Seniors, alumni and continuing education students to help them with career exploration, personality assessments, picking a major, finding internships and jobs and applying for/researching graduate schools.  Not sure I always love career services, but I LOVE working with college students.  For my master's program I studied 18-24 year old development (kind of like early childhood, but on the other end of the spectrum).  My one on one sessions with my students and teaching are the favorite parts of my job!

Great topic to post Liz - the career counselor in me loves this!

I would have loved to have someone like you to work with when I was in college.  Maybe you would have convinced me that I was in the wrong major before I graduated never to use my degree.  I know that there is something else I should have majored in, but still to this day--14 years after I graduated, have no clue what that is.

I know there is something out there that I would LOVE and be good at and make decent money doing.

Lisa - more than half of the students I work with are in a major for reasons that don't make sense.  Usually mom and dad push them that direction or they think by being a business major they'll make major bucks.  It's pretty much the opposite - my soap box speech is: Study what you love, and the money will follow!

It's all about what you value in life - and considering that will change drastically from the time people are 18 picking their major vs. 40 with kids and a life... it makes sense that a career path with continue to change.  Biggest misnomer out there is that the major defines what you do with your life/career.  Instead, the major really shows what you're passionate about studying and your career shows your skills, abilities and talents.  Hopefully all of that eventually aligns!

Feel free to ask me questions anytime - I'd be happy to help!

I am a small business marketing manager for a major telecommunications company --- wondering if Sansobel and I work for same company.  I do local marketing for small business which means I do a lot of chamber of commerce events and tell engineering and product management what we need to meet small business customer's needs.  I've been with Verizon for 32 years but have had many, many different jobs in product management, channel management, and marketing.  During my mid-career crisis (akin to mid-life crisis), I thought I wanted to be a high school business teacher.  I took 2 years off and got my master's in business education.  After student teaching, however, I decided I hated teenagers and wondered what I had been thinking.  So although I'm certified to teach, I don't.

At Verizon, I have been very lucky.  In my marketing position, I job-share.  I work Wed/Thurs/Fri only.  My partner works Mon/Tues.  We are jointly responsible for 1 job.  I started job sharing 15 years ago when my own children were younger and it has proved to be the best of both worlds.  A great balance.  First to be more active in my kids school/sports activities and now to do the same for my 5 grand-children (it was great to go to my 7 and 5 yo grandchildren's halloween parties and parades)

Well we have a really diverse group here.  My full-time job is as a Deputy Coroner.  Basically we investigate almost every death that occurs outside the hospital and every death that occurs in the hospital that is from other than natural causes or unknown causes.  We basically investigate the cir****tances, determine Cause and Manner of Death, notify next-of-kin, photograph and document, etc.

I also work part-time as a Paramedic.  I think everyone knows what that is.  So that's me basically....
