OT- Ipod Touch vs. Ipod Nano
Quick question for those of you out there using Ipods. I have ventured into the world of Ipods yet... but I'm thinking that this year my Christmas list might include one. I've just started looking and I'm debating between the generation 2 (8GB) Ipod Touch for $199 vs. the new 16GB Ipod Nano for $170.
Ipod touch has the wireless capabilities - which I love... but it does not have it's own network, so I would have to be around free wireless to access it (not sure how realistic that is). I doubt I get into using it much for videos - but biggest feature that is a plus to me is the internet. It I could get to the internet, I might be able to track my daily intake of things as well as look up nutritional info on the go.
Ipod Nano with the 16GB looks great for workouts and the perfect portable size. Would easily fit in my pocket or purse and would work well on the go. It has the capability to hook up to the Nike Plus shoes if I wanted to eventually track my workout (anyone try this yet?) It comes in 9 fun colors - which for me is a vain plus.
The price difference isn't really too much of a concern - I'm just curious what you all have and what you might recommend for a beginner. My main purpose would be workouts. Web browsing would possibly prevent me from having to upgrade to a blackberry on my cell phone plan.
Thanks for any input!

I have gadgets out the butthole thanks to hubby - although - i must admit he normally picks them out for me and has all the know how and guru stuff and reasoning behind it.
I will ask him when he gets up (after I show him your post) and get his imput on it.

Instead of complaining that the rosebush has thorns, be happy that the thorn bush has roses.

My hubby is the instigator of this. He's an IT guy - and is always looking for the newest and best gadget to improve our lives. Right now he's trying to convince me to get one of those Mega phones that will allow me to use it as a planner, reminder and appointment scheduler... I'm always resistant to change and think my little flip phone works just fine. Curious to see what your hubby has to say about the ipods - thanks!

I have a shuffle and a nano. I only use them when I run because I can't run without music (it's all mental) but I honestly like my shuffle the best and use it more often than I use my nano. I guess it depends on what you are going to use it for.

Thanks! I'm not to running yet... but that was the impetus for me thinking about getting one. I'm trying to think of things now that I might need down the road with the lifestyle change that is about to come!

personally, I think if you are going to bother getting an Ipod touch, then you should just get an IPHONE.. it only costs a bit more and then you'll have the phone and the other stuff all in one. I have a shuffle which works just fine for me with my music and/or audio books. I bought my daughter a Nano for her birthday.. she would have been ok with a shuffle too, but wanted to be able to do video and see what song was playing or loaded on it.
I have both. I work in IT (I'm a digital archivist) so yes, I'm a geek. But to be fair, I only had to pay for the Nano, the Touch was a gift from my employer.
The Nano I use for things like working out or listening to music on the train, etc, and the Touch I use for keeping a calendar and some of the other very nice apps available for it. Even though the Touch stores music, I didn't really see myself using it for workouts since it's so much bigger than the Nano. I love how small the Nano is, and I bought a special lanyard headset so that it just hangs around my neck. I don't use the Nike Plus feature since I already have a GoWear Fit armband to track such things but I know there are some on here who use it and like it.
It's really a personal preference, so I recommend going to either an Apple store or Best Buy and playing with both to see which you like best. Or get both! ;)

So according to my husband...he's leaning towards the ipod touch for you. He says the only reservation on that is exactly HOW much music you want to store ...if you have a lot of different music obviously the bigger storage device would be better. He also says that iPod touch A) works with the Nike thing (how he knows this I have no idea) and that it also comes in a 16GB size, so if storage is a problem....then you could get the best of both worlds.
iPod touch can have all the features of an iPhone (apps etc). However, I have to agree w/ Lisa...if you're gonna go that route that just bite the bullet and get the iPhone. I recently did and absolutely LOVE it. I didn't think I would use it as much as I do...but I use it for EVERYTHING now..calendar, phone, blah blah blah blah. The only thing I don't use it for is as an iPod (ironic, no?) And that's because well - we have three of the damn things between the two of us...one I keep in my car...one is a "house" one that I also bring to work, and then my husband has his. Long story there.
Personally - it would annoy me to have to many gadgets "needed" all at one time....IE the cell phone, the ipod...blah blah blah. The more "all in one" approach is more like me. I have enough trouble leaving the house with myself and my keys, let alone remembering to bring everything else with me, LOL

Melissa,
I've got the Nano (the 8 Gig) and truly love it. It's the perfect size for workouts, fits in an armband and works beautifully. I use it with the nike+ sensor withOUT the nike plus enabled shoes... instead, I opted for the little pouch you can buy to hold the sensor that velcros to the laces of ANY running shoe. It works very well, but you do need to calibrate it periodically and it's not race-level calibration to distance because it's like any pedometer - movement-based. But it does work amazingly well.
I do my nutrition and fitness tracking online using SparkPeople, which I do from any computer I can access... and also from my Treo. Phone-wise, I'm planning to get a Droid (I'm a verizon customer) soon as my "new every two" time rolls around (in January)... that will be the first time in years and years that I haven't had a Palm! I love my Treos!
Hope this helps!

i used to be the ipod sales associate at best buy (still prob know the most about them in my store just a different department now), so this is right up my alley. lol. it honestly depends which one you think you'd be more comfortable using.
wireless networks are more and more common now at different retailers and resturants, or you could always jump on a home unsecured network. you could also download some apps that do all the tracking, and you don't have to be online for it. i just checked the app store and there is a nikewomen training club one that looks pretty cool. it says its for iphone, but you could most likely use it on the touch too. says you can set stuff up for it on nikewomen.com and its free. the second gen is getting a little harder to find though.
i do like the nano size better for working out since its smaller, but for either you could get an armband or belt clip which would make it a little easier.
i personally have a classic simply because i have over 30gb of music on my computer (plus a ton of movies and the entire sex and the city series lol) and need the storage. i also have an iphone, and most likely will be getting a shuffle in the next month or so just because its easier for going to the gym. so i'm pretty much an ipod/apple nut lol. definitely let me know if you have any questions cause i miss talking about ipods with people all the time haha
