Personal Trainer - First time

Well I survived!

I had my first session with a personal trainer today. I knew this woman as a fitness instructor, but as I talked with her a bit and shared my WLS story, she recommended that I work with her as a trainer.

So when I sat down with her today, she said, "You know my story right?" I didn't.

She has lost 110 lbs. Not through WLS, but on her own (as she put it, "one calzone at a time) about 4 years ago. (She is 27 currently.)

And she really gets it. She specializes in working with people who have had weight issues - I didn't know that. But it's funny how things work out, isn't it? She has several clients who are WLS patients.

As for the workout - we did legs, triceps, chest, abs, stretching....and I go back next week. More than I would ever do on my own at the gym, for sure, and bertter form to boot! She also gave me a planning sheet to look at how strength training will fit in whether I get to the gym 3, 4 or 5 times per week.  That's really helpful.

Another motivator...

Its wonderful that you found someone *****ally 'gets' it - I think that is so important when working with someone like that. Do you go to a gym to work with her? My Curves membership is up in the spring and I'm tossing around finding a PT to change things up, but I really don't want to have to join a gym again - I'd like to be able to be taught things to do at home.

Congrats again - sounds like you found a good one.

A comment I just recalled from the trainer:

The gym is a lot like church. It's really easy to just skip it. And then, it's really really hard to walk back through that door.

I am 13 months out and have been faithful about exercise.  I belong to the Y and go at least three times every week.  I have two small children and I work - but I have made exercise a priority in my life and have been pretty consistant.  So now I have reached a big stall in my weight loss.  And, yes, I need to cut back on carbs and perhaps cheese intake..... but I decided I wanted to get a trainer.   Just thought I needed someone to tell me if my workout routine was a good fit for me, where I am now, and where I want to be.  I was doing high impact cardio at the Y and felt like I wasn't seeing results.  Well, let me tell you all that this trainer has changed me.  I workout four times a week now doing resistance training.  In just two short weeks I have decreased my body fat by 2%.  I feel amazing and I can see the difference when I look in the mirror and when I put my clothes on.  I do a half hour of resistance training followed by a half hour of low impact cardio.  It has made a tremendous difference already.  I can't wait to see what the future holds!!!

Amy, that resistance training is really a key. I had been doing aerobics (figuring that moving my own body was enough weight training) - but the trainer I saw said it will really sculpt and shape your body as you lose weight. And it does have metabolic benefits that aerobics alone do not.

Very cool to learn all this isn't it!

Sounds awesome!!!  Glad you had such a good work out with someone who has kind of "been there done that" type of deal and gets where we are coming from!  congrats!

That sounds so awesome that you found somebody that will be a good fit for you. Wish I had found trainers more like that! My experiences have left me with a sour taste in my mouth.

My last trainer, Olga, tiny beautiful russian women was very nice but I don't think she understood what it was like for me. I always wanted to please and I'd put myself to the point of getting heart palpitations and seeing black spots! She'd be doing the same thing and never even broke a sweat!  I'm doing what she is doing and I feel like I'm dying.

The trainer before that really pushed me which is what I wanted but she was a strong muscular black women who has probably never been fat in her life! She was a bit more motivating but I could tell she was getting frustrated with my lack of progress. It crushed my motivation when she'd "accusingly" ask me what I was eating if I was exercising on my own.

The guy before that only lasted one session, he had this look of discust in his eyes from the moment he saw me and even recommended I might be better off with a women trainer.

Given up on the whole personal trainer thing for now. Maybe someday I'll find someone like yours.
