I am feeling blue...
I just found out that a good friend from my previous job just got laid off after working for J&J for 8 years. I was laid off from there last year she called me today and I feel her pain there is nothing out there that will pay her as well as she got paid at her current job. What ever happened to job security? I feel so sorry for our kids they will be hopping from one job to another FOREVER. Ugh sorry just had to vent. PLUS my back is killing me and I have sore throat and an awful cold that I have been trying to fight off for the last 2 weeks-unsuccessfully. Thanks for listening....
Shilpa,
It is sad when someone loses a job. I've been with a large company for almost 32 years but every year (or sometimes twice a year) for the past 10 years I've help my breath during Reduction in Force (affectionately know as RIF). I have one out of 3 kids with a sort of secure job, but who knows . . .
Feel better hunny. Get over that cold.
Love, Lisa Mc

Shilpa,
Let me give you a perspective that might help... It's not all about the money, even though the money can be important in the grand scheme of things. It's not everything.
When I was laid off from Telcordia after 9/11, I was out of work for about 2 years. Part of that time was the best time of my life, when I could re-assess my priorities and preferences, sort out exactly what I WANTED in a job, and in my life. Instead of looking for a JOB, I looked for an employer that I wanted to work for, then scoped them out and built a network of people who knew me and could vouch for me when A job (not my dream job, but something I was qualified for and was a starting point) opened there.
I found a job exactly where I wanted to work, but for 1/3 what I was making at my previous position. The benefits, however, are HUGE. I've gotten my life back. I no longer have to spend weeks at a time traveling and missing out on my family. I can take classes and teach classes in areas that interest me that are expansions of my LIFE goals (not just job-related). My family benefits in numerous ways. The work atmosphere and people are excellent and supportive, and understand that people need balance between work and personal life.
After 5 years, I'm up to right about 1/2 of my prior salary. But I wouldn't go back. The COST of that money previously was just too high.
So maybe these thoughts might be some guidance as to how to re-frame and re-focus thinking around the layoff at bit.
And I HOPE YOU FEEL BETTER!!!
Karen

It all sucks, plain and simple.
Your kids, however, may NOT have to jump from job to job to job forever. It does seem that way right now...but at some point, some how, we will get it all turned around.
As far as physically - feel better. Emotionally will take more time.

Instead of complaining that the rosebush has thorns, be happy that the thorn bush has roses.

Just goes to show how caring a person you are that you're feeling so blue over your friend's situation, but they will be okay - its a big change and not one I'd want to face right now, but having a friend like you is definitely going to help her through it.
And hey, take care of yourself! Don't take that sore throat and cold lightly - or the aching back...too much flu and junk going around right now. Feel better soon.
