very moody and irritated over everything today
So I am almost 2 weeks post op and have lost 15 pounds. I thought this was good. I have had my concerns about eating and making sure i was getting enuf or to little, but all in all have done and felt great. Then I get a call from a coworker who had surgery by the same surgeon the day before me. She says she has lost 34 pounds alreay? WTH. I thought I was doing good then this news just really brought me down. I know its not a race and I want my body to loose as its comfortable doing so, but I cant help but be ticked off she has lost over double what I have. She is heavier than I and much taller than me, could this be why? Also she said she started phase 2 foods today and I was told not to start till cleared by the surgeon at my 2 week appointment. She said she they told her she could start early...Now this just aint fair...lol. I want something other than broth too
I also have just had a icky day.....Felt great, went for 2 walks today, but I have a problem with having to weigh myself everyday. Well everyday the scale has gone down and down, except for today. I didnt even loose an ounce. I was so upset, I jsut cried. I am convinced I am doing something wrong. At this stage in the game shouldnt it be steadily comming off? Am I just over reacting and being paranoid. My husband tells me all the time, I am just way to impatient...lol. I am just scared that after all the failure with diets this is going to fail me too i guess. Well I guess I have vented enough for the night. If youve read this thank you, and sorry for sounding so childish, I am just fustrated.

Paula,
You don't sound childish! We've all been there too. Or at least I know I have! lol When I was doing Weigh****chers years ago, I was amazed at how quickly the weight was coming off in the beginning. One of the leaders told me that the more we have to lose, the quicker it comes off in the beginning. Maybe that's what you're experiencing with your friend. And please please please don't compare your weight loss with anyone else! We all lose at a different rate, even if the rest of our stories and experiences are similar. Be patient with your weight loss---we all go through stalls throughout this journey, not to mention that your body is adjusting to what it's going through.
I totally feel your pain about wanting something other than broth!! I was on liquids for 3 weeks and didn't think I could take another day of that stage. Someone who's surgery was the day before mine and by the same doc had posted that she was cleared for the next stage a week early, and I was soooo jealous. But I made up my mind that it was in my best interest to follow the plan as it was laid out for me. You'll get through this stage much quicker than you think and then it will start to seem like a distant memory.
Hang in there, Paula!!! You WILL get through this!!! Vent anytime you need to---we understand!

Thanks for the reply Julia. I do feel better. I am going to put the scale away, and try very hard to stay off it for at least a few days..lol... I am very glad my coworker has done this to better her health, but I am not going to waste time worrying about her, when I have my own self to worry about. I did this for me and I am going to concintrate on me.
Thanks again for the reply.

Your surgeon will look at your weight loss as a percentage of excess body weight, not the number of pounds you lose. Therefore, you need not compare yourself to other people. They have different amounts to lose, so they are going to lose at different rates.
I have been in AA for twenty years, and used to compare my emotional recovery and ability to handle things sober with other people who had the same amount of sober time as I did. I was told by an old-timer, "Compare yourself to yourself." I have learned to transfer that wisdome to my weight loss journey. Keep your chart and your pictures and look at YOUR weight before and now, and YOUR pics before and now.
As for foods, stick with the plan you were given by YOUR doctor. It is only a short amount of time in the grand scheme of life, and you will be eating solid food then. For now, you are healing your body from major surgery.
You do not sound childish. You sound like a lot of us did after our surgery. You are also dealing with a lot of hormones that the body releases during weight loss. This is something I was totally unaware of at first. Keep taking it one day at a time, and learn some coping strategies for dealing with the frustrations that life throws at you. It will come in handy later on.
Hugs,
Trish

Seek always to do some good, somewhere. Every man has to seek in his own way to realize his true worth. You must give some time to your fellow man. For remember, you don't live in a world all your own. Your brothers are here too.

everyone looses weight at a different rate, It depends on age, sex pre/post menopausal, the heavier you are the more weight you have to loose the faster it will come off, you cannot compare yourself to anyone else, she may also be talking pre-op including the liquid pre-op diet. actually 15 lbs is right on target.some people say throw out the scale & don't look at it daily, it is a personal thing. I get weighted every day same time same amount of clothing .That is what works for me. If I got weighed once a week or once a month only, I could gain 10 lbs and I woud just go nuts, I am 2 1/2 years out and get weighed every day, yes I have gone thru stalls and it is nerve wracking but getting weighed every day is right for me maybe not everyone else but for me it is.
How do you know she is telling you the truth anyway. I wouldn't pay attention to anyone else, also she may have had a larger water weight gain post-op then you , some people can gain 15 lbs water weight, I only gained 6 lbs while in the hospital from the IV's.
You are doing just fine . it is better to let your stomach rest post-op. I was on clear liqs 1 wk, then full liqs 2 weeks , then puree 1 week and then soft for 1 wk, then regular, everyone is different
good luck you will be fine

I read this the other day and just didn't have a second to type everything out.
I have not read all of the answers...so I am sure I am repeating info so I will keep it brief. First off...the moodiness is to be expected. It SUCKS!! Unfortunately, estrogen is stored in fat, so as you are rapidly losing weight, you are releasing estrogen. Welcome to a wild ride!
Also...the weight loss is more accurately described as "percentage loss" NOT actual pounds. A few years ago....the "gold standard" was 50%-75% of "excess weight" loss in the first year. Sooo...that would mean that someone who needed to lose 100 pounds would be expected to lose 50-75 pounds in the first year. Where as someone who needed to lose 200 pounds would be expected to lose 100-125 pounds in the first year. So, the fact that your friend is bigger/taller than you, may be playing a big part in it.
Hang tough - you'll get there!

Instead of complaining that the rosebush has thorns, be happy that the thorn bush has roses.
