Lesson learned - Creature of habit

I think I learned a lesson yesterday!

My usual habit is to have a protein shake for breakfast, then I feel pretty well "set" for my day, and am confident I can get the rest of my protein and fluids in.

So yesterday hubby and I decided we needed to take a break and drove down to Rehoboth for the day. We went out to breakfast, and I fully realized that my scrambled egg was not going to give me my typical shot of protein early in the day.

I'd packed my snacks,, so was okay with a baby bel cheese and light yogurt, but we ended up not having lunch until about 2 p.m. By that time, I was w-a-y over the hill - late on protein intake , and felt anxious and jittery.

After having lunch, I felt somewhat better physically but still out of balance and off kilter. We found a little Mexican dive for dinner, where I didn't eat much,  and I topped off the day with a protein bar when we got home...but yikes, my entire system felt off balance.

So the lesson is - do what works. If it's working, do it. Don't mess around with a good thing.

well to some point that is true but there is also proof that shaking things up is good for the system too. It helps to "keep the body on it's toes" and confuse it during stalls. THat being said always being prepared is the most important! Beef jerkey is a great one to keep in the car just in case because the heat and cold won't affect it.

SOunds like you did great with your choices eating out and you should be proud of yourself for that! WHen I saw the title I thought this was going to be a dumping/suck post.

So....would I be shaking it up enough to reverse my typical order of meals?

Or do you mean by eating a different selection of foods enitrely?

Part of my lesson is that the protein intake has to be spread out evenly...can't just jam it in at the end of the day. Ditto the fluids, although they are easier to manage when out and about.

reversing the order and eating a vartiety of different foods both help! It is hard to stick to your regimine when on the road. I have heard people that put a serving of protein powder in a ziplock baggie - you can get a thing of milk at any convenince store and shake it up. I also always travel with a cooler so I can have water (Freeze a few bottles and use them as your ice to conserve space!) cheese sticks, yogurt, beef jerkey, sliced cheese, hard boiled eggs etc.

fluids are easier to manage but with a little prep and practice so can getting in your protein!! It took me a while to get the hang of it but now it is like second nature. I got one of those insulated tote bags, it is the size of a large purse and zips up - I take it on any overnight or weekend trip I do now - it's been a lifesaver!

Well...I tend to follow the same basic principals and/or routines as well.

When I would hit stalls I would definately try to change it up.

The other thing is....you do have to be able to adjust to your day and be ready for change.  If you don't have your protein shake for whatever the reason....you need to be able to know you'll get your protein in other ways.  And definatley make sure you always have snacks and water with you in the car/in your bag (non pershible items) for unexpected times you are out longer than you had anticipated.
