Hello everyone,
So I have a question its not about me its about a girl around my age who contacted me here on OH, she has been researching to get wls. She is 5'8'' and she is about 370 pounds, she also has horrible back pain from her weight and arthritis, she has tired very very hard to lose this weight on her own without much success. When the idea of weight loss surgery was brought up to her PCP he told her and her parents that preforming WLS on anyone under the age of 18 was against the law in PA (where she lives).  Because of this her parents have told her that wls isn't an option anymore and that she is just going to have to lose weight on her own which she is trying very hard to do but we all know how that is.

My question is, is it really against the law for someone under the age of 18 to get WLS in PA? Even with parental permission?

I did a search and found that UPMC in Pittsburgh performs surgery on patients as young as age 16.  This must mean that it is not illegal to perform the surgery on people below age 18.  Send your friend this link.  I am sure that other hospitals in PA also perform the surgery on such patients.

It isn't illegal it is each Dr's perogative wether or not they will do it. I know Dr Alan Brader out of Lancaster General Hosp. will do it if he feels that she is a good candidate.

I would either have her wait until she turns 19 and do it or seek other physicans.

Hope that this helps!

What area of PA is she in??
