I need your advice

Hi everyone,

I hope all is well with everyone.

I really need some advice.  I am feeling somewhat frustrated.

I am 5 weeks post op tomorrow and during the first 4 weeks I was down about 32 pounds.  My weight loss has halted dramatically and I have only lost a pound in the last 4 days.

I haven't deviated and I am doing everything I am supposed to.  I am getting in excercise as well.

Has this happened to anyone else? What do I do?

I appreciate your input.

Thanks.

ahh the first stall. TOTALLY normal!! Just keep on truckin and before you know it the weight will be coming off quickly again. Your body is catching on to what is going on and it isn't sure it likes it. Try mixing up your foods and routine a bit that should help kick start things. For example if you always have a chocolate protein shake for breakfast - have yogurt instead and have your protein shake for lunch.

Here's to hoping that the scale starts moving agian for you very soon!

Long story short: stay the course.

It truly is a marathon, not a race.

Geoff?! 32 pounds in the first four weeks is an average of 8 pounds a week.  Holy schmoly!  Awesome job.

Anyway...as many others have said..welcome to your first stall.  Plan for it to be around for at least a little while.  Stay off the freaking scale for awhile, at least a week.  It will only torment you.

You can try changing up your eating (ie if you eat more dairy on a daily basis, change it up to more meat products) and changing up your exercise routine which can help.

However...your body is realizing that you are getting a lot less calories than you are used to, and because of that....it's holding on to its reserves with all its might.

Hang in there, you are doing great!

Pam,

Thank you for your advice.  I went to my weekly support group last night and they told me that I am not getting in enough protein and calories.  I really didn't do too well getting in a lot of protein yesterday.  When I came home I had two and a half tablespoons of all natural peanut butter and a small glass of skim plus.

I actually lost a pound this morning.  Hopefully a sign of good things to come.  It is so hard for me to understand how having a couple more hundred calories a day is better, but I am following all you experts.  So 36 pounds it is.

I think you are right as far as getting weighed everyday.  It is extremely tormenting.

Thank you again for your input, I do appreciate it very much.

Have a wonderful day.  I am back in training again today.  It has been a long three days, but at least the training class is done today.

Many will say that they don't weigh daily. I do...still...and probably should break the habit. It is easy to lose perspective after surgery. I am losing at a slow pace but have dropped about 1/3 of my excess weight in 11 weeks. Can't argue with that!

My best perspective comes when I check my journal, where I record weight and measurements monthly. Just when I think that I haven't lost much of anything, I realize I'm down 17 lbs. since my last visit to my PCP.

Or I look at my measurements and realize that my waist and hips are down 6 inces each.

Or I open my (no almost empty) closet and try to be sure I have at least a pair of jeans and a skirt that will fit me for the next week.

Of my husband hears me grumbling and asks, "So where would you be if you had NOT had surgery?"

You're doing great!
