Food Scale & Therapy

Does anyone use a food scale, and if so what kind?  Trying to get everything together that I can possibly think that I will need to get me started.  Also thinking that it might be a good idea to go to therapy before surgery, as there has to be an underlying reason as to how I got here, but I guess I am not smart enough to figure it out on my own and need some outside help.  My only reservation with that is that it might interfere in my getting the surgery, and finding someone who is in the "know" about WLS.  Any ideas would be helpful.
Thanks in Advance, Ena

yes, I have used a food scale since my hubby had surgery in 2006. when I try to guess the correct amount I'm usually way off base and over, so I prefer to be accurate.

Since I've had my surgery on Sept 14th i also use the food scale for me. I like to have a percise measurement of the amount I'm putting into my body.

the scale I use and love is Eat Smart Food Scale, I got it at Amazon.com. The scales website is www.eatsmartscales.com

I also think therapy is a good thing. I had been in therapy for 5 years. My therapy was needed because of many abuses that had gone on in my previous life/marriage.

my previous therapy did not interfere with having WLS, as a matter of fact my psychologist that did my psy. eval was very impressed that I went to therapy and worked through everything I did. my previous therapy ended up being a positive in my psy eval for WLS.

Good Luck.....

Yep - i have my food scale and use it daily.  But didn't get it until I started on soft foods, because that's the point where you really start counting things a lot more closely.

I got mine at wegmans and like it. It's one of the EatSmart brand digital scales.  Make sure it has sufficient capacity for recipe ingredients, especially if you're going to be doing any baking later on... a 5lb would be sufficient capacity, I'd think.  And you really don't need to worry about the fancy gadgets like bowls and scoops and calculators for nutrients... you can use your regular cooking bowl (put it on empty, zero the scale, add your ingredients and read it) or plate and you'll be doing your nutrient tracking elsewhere probably, so you can save the extra money.

Just look for a sealed front (spills happen) and ideally a removable tray that you can easily wash.

As to therapy, I wish I'd started before surgery.  Yes, it really helps to understand how you got here because that's the key (I think) to figuring out how to succeed and how to avoid going back.

This is also a great time to start figuring out how you're going to incorporate exercise into you daily routine.  Weather will be getting "unfriendly" soon, so walking outside may be iffy - how are you going to put a strategy in place so that weather can't be an "excuse" for not exercising?  And exercise at first can just mean a nice brisk (for you) walk... or stretching/yoga... or swimming... or dancing... something that you find FUN and ideally a variety of things so you don't get bored.

Thanks Liz,Ida and Karen,
I have joined a gym, although I have not been there yet.  (I go to my daughters in Salisbury Md every Thurs and come home on Mondays.  I watch the littlest granddaughter while she works nites until Deliah get a little older, Daddy is good and takes care of the 6 and 4 yr old.)  Their development is built on a circle which is a mile and I do try to walk it once a day unless it rains.  I also have an air walker in my living room at home if all else fails.  So thanks for the tips all, and I am going to make an effort to find a therapist that has experience in WLS to start that ahead of time.  I do realize that the more I do for myself now the better the surgery will go.  Thanks all for your responses.  Ena

I have used a food scale, but not recently.  It is a good habit that I slack off on regularly.

Therapy is a terrific idea.  I have been in therapy for my eating disorder for a very long time.  In therapy, I have learned coping skills like self-soothing, and have identified childhood issues and traumas that have contributed to my addictive personality and behaviors.

yes and yes :)

Food scale will come in handy when you are onto "real foods" not something you are going to need in the first few weeks though.

Therapy - my theory now is it never hurt anyone!

Best of luck!
