Any pittsburgers here
Hi everyone,
I am new to the board. I am from Uniontown PA, and was just wondering if there is anyone here from the Uniontown/Pittsburgh area. I am secheduled for RNY on 9/30/2009 with Dr. Anita Coucoulas at Magees womens hospital. Anyone familar with the surgeon or hospital??? Any advice, as i have only been to the hospital 3 times. How are the rooms? Are they friendly? How lienient are they with visiting as my family lives almost 2 hours from there? Any advice would be great. I also look forward to meeting some new friends....

Hi, Sewickley here. I had my surg at Sewickley Valley, but have had other surgeries at Magee. The nurses are wonderful and the rooms are very nice. I believe they've done a whole separate bariatric wing. I had family staying with me overnight since I was having some issues, and they were completely fine with that (I had a private room, though--if you have a roommate it might be different). Good luck!
Thanks everyone for the welcome and replies. I have heard wonderful things about Magees, but i am just not sure what to expect. It is always scarey going somewhere you are not familar with. My husband will be with me the day of surgery, but will be working until the day I come home. Of course he'll be there to visit daily, but I will be there the majority of the time by myself.
Hey! I had my surgery at Magee Hospital. My surgeon was Dr. Ramanathan. The whole bariatric staff, and hospital staff were phenominal. I couldn't have chosen a better hospital or doctor. You'll have a private rooms and you can have visitors up until 8pm. After 8, i dont think you're allowed to have anyone there, but thats something you'll just have to ask...
Anyway, if you have any other questions feel free to PM me or call! There's a thread a little bit down further called Western PA Cooking/Support group Meeting and you can find some contact info for me there and you're more than welcome to join the meeting we're having this Saturday in Pittsburgh!
Take care and talk to ya soon!!

Hey! I'm a Pittsburgh girl too!
I live in the South Hills and had my surgery at Sewickley Valley.
I've heard nothing but wonderful things from Magee. From people I know that work at Magee and a nurse I know that has worked with her, Dr. Courcoulas is the best in the city. You are in excellent hands.
I'm also a part of the Western PA Support Group with Jena. It's a great time and we have a fun group of girls. We'd love for you to join us!
If you need anything, please let me know. :)
Nice to meet you,
Kara

Hello, welcome and nice to meet you.
I had my surgery at Magee (with Dr Eid) back in march. Totally awesome experience. The bariatric unit has just been redone and is very nice. The rooms are private with private baths (at least mine was and most of what i saw were) .. They just redid a nice large and comfy family lounge with sofas and recliners, a fridge stocked with juices and yogurt and stuff for family, coffee, tv, etc. The nursing staff was awesome. Everyone all around was great, from pre-op to check out. I couldnt have asked for a better experience. Keep in mind though, that it IS a hospital, and as such at times is understaffed...meaning that if you need pain meds or help to the bathroom you should try to ring your call bell with at least 1/2 hour notice if possible. They answered my calls quickly but sometimes i took them a while to actually get to my room. I dont see that as a negative, just as a fact of life nowadays in health care.
If I had it to do all over again i definitely would go t Magee again.
