new to OH, waiting for a surgery date
Hi there! I am new to the forum. I am waiting for confirmation for surgery (RNY), maybe for October 7, 2009. Dr. Leon Katz at Crozer in Upland Pa. is my Physician. Has anyone had surgery with Dr. Katz? Has anyone had to do the two week pre-op diet. I am looking for tips on how to get throught this! Just looking for new friends and any advice anyone has to offer. I live in rural Coatesville, PA.

Hi Everyone, Thank you all for your replies to my post! I see there was some encouragement from my dear friend Geri! (ha-ha) Love you too Geri! Sandra, yes we are neighbors. I live in the Wagontown area. Would love to talk to you sometime! I am still waiting to hear from Dr. Katz' office. They tell you not to call so I am just WAITING! I had my last test on Friday, my stress test. I think it went ok. Thanks again for the replies.

Hi Ann,
Welcome to the forum. I'm sure you're going to find a bunch of new friends on this wonderful support network.
I don't know what specific type of pre-op diet Dr. Katz uses, as there's a huge variety in approaches both pre- and post-op by different surgeons. The insight I can share is that for many of us, the pre-op was the hardest diet, because you're changing the way (and amount) you're eating drastically without benefit of a newly formed pouch or the aftermath of surgery. AFTER surgery, you won't feel hungry (or full) for quite a while, so drastic changes to your eating patterns can occur more consciously.
Focus now on moving as much as possible - walking is a great way to get yourself moving. Stretching now is great, too, as it will begin to limber you up. Whatever you can do pre-op will help with your recovery and will start you on your way to great post-op success.
Welcome!

Hi Ann
Welcome and Good Luck to you. I am 5 years post op. I did a 10 day liquid diet. As for tips?
I will be honest. It is tough and hard. Just know that it is for a wonderful outcome, good reason and keep in mind the final results you will see through this. I personally was grumpy, *****y and miserable at times. Then other times, it didn't bother me. It's all about being focused and prepared.
I don't know anything about your surgeon. But come here anytime for questions.

Hi Ann,
Welcome to the PA boards.
I will be having surgery this coming monday Sept 14th. I am in my last day of my two week liquid diet then tomorrow I'm on all clear liquids with nothing after midnight. I'm surprised that I adapted to the liquid diet very well. The doctor's office had me use Slim fast low carb, 5 cans a day. in between that I could have all the sugarfree jello, decaf tea, and broth that I wanted and 64 oz of water everyday. I was surprised that the shakes kept me full, I didn't expect that. Some days all I had were the shakes and my 64 oz of water.
I'm having my sugery with Dr. Dempsey @ Jeanes hospital in Philly.
Good luck, everything will be here before you know it. I know for me these past two weeks have flown by.
Take care
Ida
