OMG I think I just had the dumping syndrome

I  think I just had the dumping syndrome.

OMG.  I waited an hour after I ate and was sipping a protein shake (way behind on my liquids today) and must have sipped too much too quick.

I got an acute pain behind the breastbone and it was ungodly.  OMG

It is starting to subside some.

Is that what this is?

I have to get in more liquids today.  How long do you think I should wait before trying to drink again?

Thanks.

I don't know that this is quite dumping.  I think it's more of a warning that you drank too much too quick.  I used to get that when I ate too fast.

I might be wrong because I only truly dumped once and it was very minor.  I just got really hot and sweaty and had to just lay down.  Thankfully it passed after about 20 minutes.  That was just from eating a spoon or two too much of ricotta cheese.

I`m like you Lisa. Once or twice it happened and it was just really hot, sweating and after 15 or 20 minutes it passed. It was sugar that did it for me.

that was taking in too much liquid too fast

if you were dumping you would not be on here asking about it, you would be in bed wishing for death

Nicole is right.  You would have waited at least an hour to come on and ask.  I have dumped several times- no fault of my own!  I get hot, sweaty, sick to my stomach, want to puke or other, have to lay down, weak legs and most of all, like she said, wish for death.  It can last 15 minutes up to an hour.  And...there is NO mistaking it!!  I have gotten the pain you describe.  I would take it 3 times a day rather than dumping at all.

It almost sounds like something was 'stuck' for you but that's not really possible with what  you're eating right now, but you might have just sipped too quick and your pouch is still very sensitive due to surgery and everything else. Just take it slow but remember that pain, because once you get back on real food if you don't chew it enough or if you eat too fast you're going to experience that pain only 10 times worse. I'm 19 months out and just had it the other night from beef tips, and I thought I had chewed them thoroughly but they were a little tough and I was in pain and misery for several hours - when that happens the only thing I can do is go to bed and lay down before the foamie****

And yes, dumping is quite different and extremely miserable - and yes, you do just want to curl up and die! I dumped 2 weeks out on Liquid Tylenol with PowerBoost - turns out the powerboost part was all SUGAR and I didn't know it. I almost passed out in my shower - hubby had to get me out and into bed. So be very, very careful with labels and things you might think are safe.

Glad you're feeling better now - these episodes of foamies, stuff getting stuck and dumping aren't fun but they are part of the journey and thankfully don't happen often so when it does don't get discouraged by it because believe me, the benefits of this surgery far outweigh the negative times.

Thank you so much for that information.

What are the foamies?

Thanks again.

Foamies are nasty stuff - they happen when you eat something too fast or don't chew it enough and food gets 'stuck' in your pouch - its not small enough to get thru the stoman and blocks it, causing food to back up in your pouch. When that happens severe stabbing pain in your upper abdomen area occurs (almost feels like you're having a heart attack or something) - then your body starts to create all this nasty saliva and it starts backing up - your nose runs, you feel like crap, and you start coughing up all this mucus-type stuff. Some people can throw up and if they can it helps unlodge the food - unfortunately I cannot so I have to suffer thru the foamies until the food decides to pass thru my system.

I have found that if I get that 'stuck' feeling the best thing to do is just lay down and try to sleep it off - if I keep moving around or try to drink something thinking liquids will pu**** through it only makes it worse, then the foamies come. The other night I had beef stuck so I just gave up and laid down - I did fall asleep and when I woke up several hours later the food had passed, but then I'm wiped out for a day and am very, very careful with what I put in my pouch.

And our new bodies are funny - something we can eat one day totally turns against us the next time we try it. I tend to stay away from stringy beef products because I know how they react on me, but foolishly I tried it again the other night and paid for it. Dumb-dumb. Its a learning process, that's for sure, and one I think we'll all experiencing forever - like I said, at 19 months out you would think I know everything that does or doesn't agree with me, but that's not always the case.

Don't fret or worry about these things - we're not telling you this to scare you - only to prepare you for what MIGHT occur - some people are fortunate and never experience dumping or foamies - I was honestly glad I dumped on sugar and I know my limitations with it - I have to stick to the 2 gram rule because anything over that will cause me start dumping - even if its only 5 or 6 grams I will have a mild case of dumping, so I tend to avoid it altogether.

You have a lot of learning to do with your new body and there is a wealth of information available from your doctor, your nuts and everybody on these boards - so relax - get your proteins and vitamins in - try not to be fixated on the scale - for the first few months get weighed at your dr appts, because the scale is only part of this journey.
