My EGD is scheduled for next Wednesday, and of course I have heard mixed stories on what to expect before, during, and after. I figured who better to ask then the one's who have gone though it. So what can I expect? From what I understand I will be awake but my throat will be numb, I will also be given an IV sedation, so I figure it cant be that bad, however, I really dont care to know what is going on at the time.  Thanks for your help!

PAtty - I've had my stomach scoped twice - both with IV sedation. THe worst part for me was that they put this thing in your mouth to hold it wide open before you fall asleep and it was making me gag - they ended up sticking it is just before I passed out. Afterwards you might have a scratchy throat - but it is tolerable. OH and that spray stuff that they squirt in your mouth tastes yucky!!

It really is no big deal - you sleep through it!

Best of luck

Hi I have had three done now and it was no problem at all. I wasn't aware of anything that was happening. I do remember the "block" thingy to keep your mouth open but I didn't have any problems with that, and I don't remember them spraying anything in my throat so maybe they did that after I was in La La Land. Afterwards I didn't have any sore throat at all. I guess some of it depends on the doctor too and how they do things but my experience was perfectly ok. Good luck, I am sure it won't be anywhere near as bad as you can imagine. Belinda

Oh I just noticed you have Dr. Currie, my surgery was done by Dr. Davidson. I think they are really great down there. Good luck

Belinda- I struggled between  Hershey Med, The Weight Loss Clinic,  and York Hospital's Plan.I am glad I chose The Weight Loss Clinic. I agree they are a great group, i have not met anyone who I did not care for.  Good to know that someone else has gone to them also!

I had one last Friday and it was a breeze. They had to fix a stricture and I had instant relief and when I woke up from the sedation I was as chatty as ever. I just felt like I took a nap. Honestly, the stuff they spray in the back of your throat was the worst part for me because it tasted terrible... but I quickly forgot about that once they knocked me out!

No worries... You'll be fine!

Thank you all for your words, it makes it a little easier hearing from some one who has been through it. My mother in law asked me the other day if I was getting excited that my surgery is right around the corner. My response was, excited yes, but scared to death, Excited I am finally going to work my way back to a healthy me, Scared of the unknown. It is nice to know I have a place I can come to get answers to my questions.

Just to let you know I will repeat what the others have said "nothing to it".  Instead of the spray, they made me gargle with the nasty stuff.  I've had it done three times and it is no big deal.  I asked them for some of the sedation, as a take out lol, its pretty good stuff.  You will be fine.

I had one in August and I don't remember a darn thing.  Dr. Brader asked me a question when I had that ring thing in my mouth... I couldn't answer.  That was pretty comical because I love to talk.  The last time I looked at the clock it was 11:30.  I woke up and it was 12:10.  I didn't have a scratchy throat or anything.  We went out for lunch and then went shopping.  Good luck!!

Hi Patty,

Thanks for posting this - I have both an EGD and colonoscopy scheduled for 9/21 and was so worried about the colonoscopy that I hadn't even thought about the EGD!
