Help for constipation! (SO Sorry!)
Ok, I'm so very sorry for posting this nasty thread, but I really need some suggestions! I tried to search for answers (past posts) before asking this...but don't know how to only search the PA Forum. (Guess I trust you all the most!)
What do you do to stay...regular? I'm done with pureed food and have started to integrate other items into my diet. The doctor said to hold off on soft, untoasted bread, fresh veges & fruits for now. Anything else should be moist and easy to chew until soft.
I'm taking my vitamins regularly (mulit, B12 and calcium) and am really trying hard to drink all of my water. It's very hard to do, even though I carry my bottle around with me all day! It seems that it just never empties! Seriously! I drink & sip & drink & sip and look down to find the bottle 3/4 full! Time for a new bottle :-) (Chuckle, chuckle!)
I'm getting pretty much only protein into my diet. Here's a typical day:
Breakfast - protein shake w/ skim milk
water
Lunch - 1/4 c. protein (cottage cheese, meatball, turkey breast lunchmeat, etc) and then if I have room, I'll add 1/4 or less of applesauce, yogurt, left over cooked veges, or whatever appeals to me and is available that day
Snack - milk or a 1oz. piece of cheese or 1 tsp Simply Jif peanut butter
Dinner - 1/4 c. protein + 1/4 c. something else if I have room- similar to at lunch, Oh, and I finally tried Wendy's chili! YUM!
Most days, especially now that I'm back to school, I don't get the afternoon snack in. Instead, I eat that around 9 o'clock at night.
So - what do I do?
Probably add veges or fruit - which ones are safe at my stage (about 1 1/2 mo. out)
My trouble (should I call it trouble?) is that I'm usually not hungry after the 1/4 cup of protein. I figured I'd take advantage of that and not MAKE myself eat more.
I called my surgeon's office (spoke to the NUT) and she recommended Myralax (sp?) that you mix in a glass of Crystal Light. Can't taste it - not bad. It doesn't seem to work though. I called again and they recommended Benefiber. I bought orange flavored chewable ones and have taken those.
What do you take on a daily (or every other day?) basis to keep this clog-up from occuring? It's so uncomfortable. (To be perfectly blunt - feel like I've got a brick stuck up there that won't come out!
Ha!Ha!

my staple is a little all bran mixed in to sugar free fat free yogurt. maybe 1/4 cup. let is get soft.
another idea is add some benefiber to your protein shakes.
Ask the doc about colace....
Definitely consult you doctor if you are really clogged up... they may have some more drastic measures for you to take.

Thanks, Jayne.
Good suggestions.
I can't find SF FF yogurt. I've been buying the Weigh****cher yogurt as it has the lowest sugar I can find. Do you mean greek yogurt? Really don't like the taste. What kind do you use? Also, how do you buy bran? Like a box of cereal?
Hopefully I can fix this before needing drastic measures. Then I better pay more attention and do some prevention so as to avoid this whole mess!
Thanks again!

Anyone else????????????

Prune Juice.... It is what works for me. I am finding that eating fresh soft fruits a veggies and just chewing the daylights out of them has worked best though.
To comment on the above post, benefiber now makes a straw of flavored drink mix, packaged like crystal light, and you just mix it in the water and sip. You can usually find it in the area of the store near the laxatives, not the area where crystal light is.

Hey girl,
It sounds like you are right on track!!! You are doing great by the way.
I use either Senna (senekot) or colace about every other day (more or less)...i take it in the evening with my iron. It seems to do the trick for me.
as far as the sipping and water goes...dont get discouraged. I think that I wasnt able to really get more and more fluids in (as much as i am supposed to****il about 3-4 months after surgery. I am 6 months out now and still have troubles some days....but it does get easier , so just keep doing what your doing.
hang in there girlfriend.....you are doing a fantastic job!!!
