I am a lerking on the screens don't post much.  I had my surgery on April 21, 2009  I am down 59lbs, but I am losing a lot of hair.  Is this normal and how long does it last.

Congratulations on your surgery and weight loss so far - that's wonderful!!

And sadly, yes, hair loss is a very nornal part of this process - the GOOD part is it is temporary and chances are you won't lose enough so that others will notice, but of course you will. My hair thinned terribly right around my face, but I'm happy to say that its back now and healthier and fuller than its ever been - and wavy!!

Make sure you're getting your proteins and vitamins in now - they are vital to not only getting your hair back but more importantly your overall health.

Some people take Biotin (I think that's what its called) and use special shampoos - works for some, not for others. There are some products that if you start taking them you can't stop - ever - so be careful of what you choose.

Just remember - its temporary - it will come back - and look at all the positive changes your body is going through and try not to dwell on the hair loss.

Thank you!  I am losing mine in the back where it is the longest.

What are the products that you can't stop taking? Mine has started coming out and I don't want to take something that I can't stop taking later.

I had super long thick hair pre-op. about 2 months out it started falling out in handfuls! I thought for sure I was going bald! Just make sure that you are hitting your protein goals every day and getting your vitamins in. I used the Nioxxin shampoo - that my mom (a cosmetologist for 30+ years) reccomended. It worked great - I also went in and got a hair cut. Hair was almost to my waist I went just about to my shoulders and it made a huge difference. USUALLY by 6-7 months it stops completely.

Congrats on the 59 pounds! That's great!! You should come out of lurking more often :)

Thank you!!  Your words are very encouraging.  My hair is down past my shoulders and it comes out in handfuls.  Sometimes I think I could make a part of a wig after a couple of days.  LOL

Where can you find this shampoo?

I got my first batch at Trade Secret.  Some salons sell it.  You can go online and do a search for places in your area.

It seems to be helping me.. I think.  Mine has been coming out in droves for about 2 months now.  My hairdresser and I can tell and my step mother swears she can (but I think she just catches me on bad hair days when I didn't take the curling iron to it)  Nobody else notices.
