Question on between now and surgery

Hi everyone,

I hope everyone had a great day.  This month is just flying right by.

I have a question for you please.  I am two weeks away from surgery and my insurance is already approved.  I am going to pre-surgical tests on Tuesday.

Do I need to be concerned if I gain any weight before surgery at this point?  Has anyone had any issues of having surgery cancelled/postponed because of a weight gain in this period?

Pam thanks for the information you gave me regarding your experience, but I was wondering if anyone else had the same problem.

Is there anything else I should be concerned about?

I had my final consult today with the surgeon and signed all the consent forms.

How many more weigh ins do I need to worry about.

Also, what are PAT's.

I know it sounds like I am freakin out, but I really am not.  Just trying to understand the rest of the process until surgery.

I appreciate the input.

Thanks.

Dr Brader and other surgeons will cancel your surgery if you gain weight so press it

Thanks guys,  I am being very careful.  I haven't gained any weight yet, but was just surprised that there was still any risk of something going wrong.

I thought perhaps if you gained any weight that the insurance company would revoke their approval.  I am less concerned about my surgeon.  I am doing good so far.  I lost 4 pounds my first weigh in and lost another 4 pounds at my second weigh in, so not bad so far.

I have to be honest though, I have had that one fleeting thought that geez I should have my farewell splurge, but alas it has only been a thought.  I really haven't been too tempted.

I guess we all have those same types of thoughts.

Thanks Karen.

I appreciate the advice.

I am trying to listen to everything that everyone is saying.

And a special thanks to Pam for sharing.

Geoff,

things are going to move quickly from this point...  it'll be no time!

PATS = "pre admission testing"  (which is what it sounds like you're scheduled for on Tuesday)

At this point, your goal should be to lose as much weight as you can - every bit you can lose between now and surgery will make your recovery much easier - and your surgery safer as well.  Some people go on liquid diets for part of that (voluntary or otherwise)... others jus****ch their intake carefully and go on a high protein low fat diet.

In terms of whether your surgery will be cancelled/postponed, that really depends on your surgeon's policy.  Some will, others won't.  Best not to test those waters.

The others have given you good advice, my only thing to add is don't fall into Last Supper Syndrome. I worried a lot in the days before my surgery that I just *had* to have something NOW because I'd never be able to have it again, supposedly.  I'm happy to say that anything that I really want, I can find a way to make WLS-friendly (and there are some great resources on this board for that).  I don't feel deprived at all -- to me, deprivation ended last August 25th!

I would ask them about possible weight gain when you go for your pre-surgery, or call and ask if that's easier, just to put your mind at ease, but it sounds like you're going to do just great.

Good luck with everything!

Thanks Lesley.

I think I am doing pretty good.  I have gotten into a routine.

I truely beleie that most of us have gotten where we were/are with are weight issues because we have a self-sabotage mechanism within us.  I feel fighting strong.  I have lost a 100 lbs a couple of times before and I am determined to it again.

We had a birthday party at work yesterday with cake and cannolies, they were sitting right in front of me.  I passed out the cake to others and didn't even think twice about having any.  The thought of eating sweet cake didn't even enter my mind.

It was great no temptation.  I have to keep this framework going.

Wow, you are doing more than pretty good, you're doing great!  Sounds like you are definitely getting into the right frame of mind -- it will help so much after surgery.

I've been told you will have your surgery moved/canceled.  The reasons make sense to me.. it can affect your health in surgery and it shows you might not be ready for the change you will have to move to.

I was also told to avoid last supper syndrome:  going out with a bang with food.  Food will still be there after surgery just not is the quantities we ate them in.

I'm less than one week to surgery and I'm fearing my 'liquid' part but I keep holding onto the joy of finally losing this weight.  Be strong,  start supplimenting your food with protein shakes, cut out the sugars and drink lots of non carbonated diet/unsweetened drinks.  It will help and who knows you might be down another 4 pounds.

Good luck!!
