Liquid Diet Pre-op info needed
Hi Geoff,
When my hubby had WLS he didn't have to do the liquid diet at all. He had to do clear liquids the day prior to or a couple days prior to surgery, I can't remember it's over 3 years ago.
I know if he'd have had to do a liquid diet as I have to for 2 weeks he'd have never had the surgery.
I do remember the surgeon telling us after his surgery that they found his liver to be fattier than they had expected. So as this surgery becomes more mainstream and perfected I'd imagine some of us after our ultra sound have to go on this liquid diet for 2 weeks. Of course I'm one of the lucky ones.
AS long as I can drive back and forth to work without feeling light headed I'm guessing I'll do ok on this.
From what I've seen on this board for the last 3+ years it's up to the surgeons discression of what you have to do prior to surgery.
Good luck with your surgery
Ida

Like Liz, I was only on liquids for a day and a half. It is a surgeon thing.
I had broth, sugar free jello, sugar free popsicles, etc. It is not so terrible.
Good luck,
Trish

Seek always to do some good, somewhere. Every man has to seek in his own way to realize his true worth. You must give some time to your fellow man. For remember, you don't live in a world all your own. Your brothers are here too.

I'm a bit late chiming in here....and didn't read all the posts....
I was only "required" to do clear liquids the day before surgery, and nothing by mouth at all from midnight on before surgery.
However, I had gained weight from consult to PATs and I was told I would be cancelled if by day of surgery I had not lost the extra weight. So I put MYSELF on basically a full liquid diet (broth, ice pops, pudding, yogurt, milk, crystal lite etc etc etc) for about 10 days before hand. I would allow myself one "meal" a day which I would only have lean protein (chicken breasts etc) and a veggie, no carbs.
I was miserable...but was 14 pounds lighter at the end of it all, LOL
Every surgeon is different....so go ahead and follow what they say
The clear liquids day before is pretty standard...helps to ensure the intestines are a bit more "cleaned out" if you will so as they are cutting and sewing things back together there's less risk for infection. I have also been told that the clear liquid diet, because of the weight loss you experience during it, can help shrink the liver, especially if it is "fatty", which in turn, gives the surgeon more room to work in that area.
Good luck!!! Can't wait to have you on the bench w/ us!!!

Instead of complaining that the rosebush has thorns, be happy that the thorn bush has roses.
