Recipes for Post-Op???

Hi Everyone,

My husband and I are just starting this process (just had my first appointment/consult with Dr. B on Friday) and hope to be on the other side by the first of the year.  One thing we'd like to do is start trying Post-Op recipes before the surgery.  This will help us get used to cooking them and also open up our minds (and stomachs) to a healthier style of eating.

I've found one cookbook that specializes in Post-Op eating, but was wondering if any of you had websites or recipes that you thought were Family/Husband friendly after surgery that we should try.  I'll be the only one having the surgery, but we're both making this journey!

Keep a close eye on this board.  Liz hosts a cooking class/support group once a month in her home and the recipies are always posted sometimes afterwards.  This months support group is on 8/29 from 12-?? (normally about 4 or 5)  Many of us post a lot of recipies that we find or make here, as well

I do infact post them after the cooking class. I also have a stash of tons of recipes.

Basically you want to eat meat (or other protein first) then veggies & fruits Limit carbs as much as possible (trust me the more you stay away and the longer - the better off you will be!!!)

If you want me to try and make something more WLS friendly just let me know!

Melissa you are my neighbor I live in Mountville as well. Liz., Pam, Nan and Shannon usually have a lot of good recipes. I also recommend eggfaces blog.

Congratulations on making this decision and on your great attitude (and support system with your hubby)!  That bodes well for success.

I like bariatriceating.com for recipe ideas.  Also - the post-surg diet is similar to South Beach and Zone diet plans, so starting with SB or Z-friendly recipes can make things even easier to adapt.  A couple of good sites for ideas:  http://www.southbeach-diet-plan.com/recipecollection.html

The sooner you can cut sugar out of your diet, the better.  You'll "detox" from it in a week or two, and things become much more manageable craving-wise after that, generally.  The Barix recommendation is as follows - limit sugars to no more than 2g per serving (read the nutrient label).  If an item has more than 2g of sugar, read the ingredients.  If sugar, corn syrup, rice syrup, cane syrup, etc., are in the first 5 ingredients on the label, avoid the product.  Otherwise, the sugars are coming from natural sources like fruits and veggies, and are ok.  Two reasons for this - first is that it will likely make you dump.  More importantly (to my mind) is that they are powerful triggers to overeating by releasing a bunch of neurotransmitters into the brain.

The other thing that I'm avoiding or strictly limiting is processed flours (enriched wheat flour, white flour, etc.).  While I am having some, during the course of a week the refined carbs I take in are pretty low.  These are trigger foods for me, which set up huge cravings for MORE bread, more biscuits, more pasta, whatever.  I know they're a problem, so limiting them strictly helps keep that in check.

I think the key for me has been figuring out what foods are triggers... then strategizing to avoid them or strictly control them.  A great book for that is Anne Katherine's "Anatomy of a Food Addiction" (literally transformed my life to read this book).
