Liquid Pre-sugery plan

Just found out I have to do a 2 week liquid Slim Fast pre-surgical plan. I hope I don't have the same reaction from slim-fast as I've had in the past, I've always gained weight when I've used it to loose weight.

I'm also hoping I don't go under and can still have surgery. I'm right on the borderline so I could very well fall under 35 BMI, I'm going to have to talk to my dr's office and see what happens if I loose weight and if I go under 35 BMI what they do.

I have a lot of praying to do in the next month prior to surgery

Yesterday was exactly 1 month to my surgery date....

Hi Sweets - the insurance company generally only gets your wegit / BMI for the approval then they don't ask again. You should be fine!!

*hugs*

can't belive you are less then a month away from your date!

My insurance company required weight loss (many do) so they don't "punish" you if you go under the BMI

Yea - Liz is right.  The BMI of 35 is needed for surgery APPROVAL, after that - they could care less what you weigh.  And with how supportive your surgeon has been thus far, I'm sure they won't mind if you lose weight before hand with all the trouble you've had thus far.

Good luck!

Thanks Pam

I'm wondering if this is because of something they saw on my ultra sound of my liver.

everytime I have looked at slim fast... it always seems so high in sugar... maybe that is why you gained... and if you are having WLS wouldn't they want you to be low sugar going into that 2 weeks before your surgery date?

Hi Shannon,
Good question. I haven't even looked at the stuff yet, but yes the sugar is high if I remember correctly. With my fasting surgars in the 200+ range as they are now I wonder. I am going to call my surgeon's office tomorrow to check on that aspect of it. I don't need my sugar going more out of control than it already is....

Before surgery, I was put on a liquid diet. I had tried Slim Fast, but the scale wasn't moving. My nutrionist recommended drinking 2 protein shakes a day (the powder mixed with milk) and a dinner of lean protein and vegetables. Maybe instead of Slim Fast, you could use a protein like Matrix or Max, etc.?
