How long after Gastric Bypass Surgery will it be before I can have a cup of coffee?  Will I be limited to decaf?

thanks.

My surgeon states no caffeine for absolutely positively no less than 6 weeks after surgery.  However, she makes it abdundently clear that she does not want us to have caffeine period.

According to her and my nuts guidelines...we are supposed to get in 64 ounces of decaf, noncarbonated, sugar free fluid a day.  Now let's say we have a 20 ounce cup of a caffenated beverage.  They state we are supposed to supplement the amount of ounces of caffeine we had w/ the same amount of decaf fluid, on top of our 64 ounces....hence....

64 ounces "normal intake"
20 ounces caffeine
20 ounces extra fluid (to compensate)
= 104 ounces

Granted....at this stage I normally get 100+ ounces of fluid in a day just because....but early out, it's hard enough to get your 64 ounces in, let alone getting in extra.

All of that being said...you can theoretically have black coffee (decaf) soon after surgery (within the first week on clear liquids)...and with milk on full liquids.  You should not add sugar to it, period, but rather, sugar substitutes due to the sugar rules after bypass.

Of course, you will need to clear all of this with your surgeon and their specific rules.

Not having caffeine is a good thing.

I can count on one hand how many times I have had a caffeine containing beverage since surgery 22 mos ago, and now basically live life caffeine free.  A BIG step considering before surgery I would drink almost an entire two liter bottle of diet pepsi a day, plus 2 or 3 diet pepsi MAX (with extra caffeine) during an 8 hour shift at work.

Now, I drink no caffeine during a 12 hour shift at work.  I never thought I was "hooked" on caffeine, but lord oh lord was I!

I love coffee, so what helped me in the beginning was I bought decaf Nescafe crystals (get the ones they sell in the Spanish section of the grocery -- much better flavor) and would add them to my protein shakes for coffee flavor.  They were especially good with chocolate protein.  Now I make iced protein coffee for myself, and also a frappuccino kind of drink with coffee and protein powder.

I do have regular coffee now, and I am careful to make sure I stay adequately hydrated.  Pam's suggestion is good, and over time you'll be able to recognize if you're feeling dehydrated and need to add more fluids.

I appreciate all the advice.

Thanks.

My book told me to get things like crystal light, cool aid, diet tang,  but didn't say anything about decaf.  I have an appt with my nuitrionist this friday, i have to double check that.

Thanks everyone, i apprec the help.

Thanks Lesley for the suggestion for the Nescafe cystals.  I like my coffee. ( To be banded soon)
