Had Surgery July 7th, have questions
Hello All,
First thanks for all you thoughts that were sent right before my surgery in July. As a new member I felt very welcomed. I had the gastric bypass done on July 7th and so far have lost 35 pounds. This week I am having trouble with losing??? Since Monday I have not lost a pound! Can anyone give me insite on this? I am trying to get in as much protien as possible. I still am on pureed foods.
Thanks, Carey

Welcome to the first of possible many stalls! Within the first 3-6 weeks of surgery your body begins to realize "holy crap - I'm not getting anywhere NEAR the amount of food I am used to" It goes into "caveman" type days, where, when food was scarce, it would "hold onto" anything and everything that a person consumed to conserve what little it WAS getting. Although food is not "scarce" anymore - it feels like it is to the body.
Stalls can be really frustrating and can last anywhere from a week to over a month or more!
Best advice:
Weigh ONLY weekly if at all.
Did you take measurements before surgery? If not....do so NOW. There will be times when you are not losing pounds, but still lose inches. This is due to the fact that muscle is more dense than fat....so as you are losing fat (ie inches) it is being replaced with muscle (assuming you are exercising) so the weight doesn't change.
Change up your eating as much as possible. Obviously, on pureed, this is a little bit harder to do. But if you are used to eating, let's say mostly dairy such as cheeses and what not, change it up to pureed chicken/meat dishes. Your body is VERY smart and quickly determines how much energy etc it gets out of the food you "normally" consume and can therefore alter itself to use it as "efficiently" as possible. If you keep your body guessing as to what it will get next, it has more trouble adjusting to it.
Same thing for exercise. It knows how much you will burn off in a given time period with the same exercise. So if you are used to doing let's say the elliptical - change to the treadmill or whatever.
Make sure you are hitting fluid goals. Protein goals are important, but will take some time to get in all you need to.
And above all, TRUST your tool. Your body will put up one hell of a fight, but it will NOT win the war. Eventually, it will come off.
Everyone loses at a different rate. Things like metabolism, exercise, food choices, age, and gender all play a part in this wacky game.
You are doing a PHENOMENAL job!

Hi Pam,
Thanks for ALL that great advice!! You really gave me a pep talk!!! And I appreciate that! I did not take measurements, but will do so today. I havent gotten to the gym yet, still feel uneasy and weak. But I have been walking with my Husband at night a couple of blocks. Over the weekend I did lose 3 pounds. But your are right about the SCALE.......I have been weighing myself everyday and that is not good. I find myself getting obsessed with it! SO that will STOP> I will weigh myself once a week. Take Care....

Carey,
Don't focus on the scale. Think about other ways to measure success.... perhaps tracking protein consumed... give yourself gold stars for each day you take all your vitamins. don't focus on the scale, more gold stars for exercise. Notice how easier it is move. Don't focus ont he scale. If you're on prescriptions, maybe you'll need to stop them (check with your dr.).....
Start going through your closet to sort out clothes that are now baggy. Just in case you didn't get my point .....DONT FOCUS ON THE SCALE!! LOL
Best wishes always,
Jayne

Hi Jayne,
I am glad you brought up the vitamins. I am having problems getting them all in everyday. Is this normal at the stage I am at? I was just thinking over the weekend that I was gonna start going through my clothes. I had to go buy a couple of things over the weekend becauase my pants are getting too baggy. WOW, I thought I would never say that!!!!!!!!! I am really gonna work on not getting on that scale everyday. I will do it once a week. Thank you for your advice, and I look forward to hearing more from you. Thanks,
Carey
