Just had to share this.

About a month ago, my HDTV started acting up when you tried to turn it on. This is the same tv that I choked on when buying - insert - "old fart's HATE paying that much for a friggin' tv". It stopped working Friday night. Just kept getting a clicking sound.  Called Samsung ...... no help except approved service company in my area. I started seaching the web, and finally found a great tech site. It seems several folks who bought a Samsung between late 2005 to 2007 are having the same problem.  The likely issue was faulty capacitors.
An expert said it would probably cost $350-$500 for service. The other option was to fix the tv on your own for about 10 bucks in parts.
I'm not the greatest with tools, but the possible fix didn't seem too hard except soldering.  I finally wimp out and call for service - closed. Seems their ad wasn't updated for summer hours.  My stepson calls and I tell him my story. He says "I can solder". We decide to give it a go. After removing a zillion screws, a panel, and more screws ........ sure enough, bad capacitors. I called 2 Radio Shacks before I found what I needed. The problem ........ the positive/negative leads were on either end versus both being on the bottom(like the bad ones).  I buy them anyway. When we get home, I realize you really can't tell which is the positive end. Most batteries, and other parts, have it clearly marked.  We "think" we know, but decide to call. The store where I bought the parts says we're wrong.  My stepson doubts him, so we call my local store. That guy says the same thing.
He solders, we reassemble the whole damn tv, plug it in ............ NOTHING. In fact ........ it wasn't even giving the clicking noise. BUMMER!!! So I start thinking it might be the soldering ........ it was either that or I'd need a whole new circuit board. I ask if we can try and do it all again. We take the whole damn thing apart ....... AGAIN ........ and he starts heating up the soldering iron. While we waited, he keeps questioning the info we got on the phone.  He calls a 3rd Radio Shack and asks the rep to look up the info on their computer. Sure enough ......... the original info was wrong. He removed the capacitors, resoldered them correctly, and now I have my tv back!!! All for 10 bucks ........ and the 3 beers he drank while we patted ourselves on the back. lol

Very funny story!  I'll bet you needed the beer after you were done!

Congrats to you and your stepson on a job well done!
Bet you're glad (and relieved) to get your television back to working order!

WOW....kudos to you!  And, by the way, it's not just "old farts" who don't like to pay that much for a TV.  The ONLY reason we have a nice tv is because of my in laws...it was a gift....and I think it is ridiculous the amount of money those things cost (but I must admit...I do love the picture quality...)

Anyway...also kudos to you for undertaking the project.  If I could just interject as a willy nilly wife type...I would have had to left the house if my hubby decided to undertake the project.  Don't get me wrong...I think he could probably do it.  But....that kind of stuff scares the crap out of me.  I'm always afraid that we'll completely break it and have to get ANOTHER new tv which would just be ridiculous.....

CONGRATS!!!  Now I know who to call if needed!  LOL

I am majorly impressed with your efforts. I would have trashed the tv and done without. Good for you! I'm sure your success was very empowering. Who knows what project you'll tackle next!
