What do you do to avoid eating when you are stressed?
Melanie,
I am a stress eater as well but have found a few tricks that work for me. I got out for a walk no matter what time it is. That is a real eye opener as once I was walking the neighborhood at around 4 in the morning. Hey I got my 3 miles in early that day. lol. Seriously though you have to use the tricks that work for you. I get out of the house go drive around just not where I am able to pull up to a drive thru though. I hope this issue gets better for you. Hang in there sweetie. Nobody said this was an easy journey. Are you coming to the next Saturday Barix meeting? NOW that keeps me grounded as well...

I walk or exercise in some way (which helps work out the frustration, as well)... I've also found that to be a great time to talk about the eating impulse with a supportive family member (usually my elder daughter). By "publicizing" the impulse to eat, I am then responsible for following through on NOT eating because I've explicitly acknowledged what's driving the impulse.
I will say - this is one of the toughest challenges - the urge to eat when stressed or upset. I've been a food-soother for my entire life, so breaking that habit is hugely hard.

I clean - usually the kitchen for some reason. I scour the stove, sink, fridge - and because I'm usually up to my elbows in cleaning solutions it makes me stay away from the food.
Now at work, that's a different story....and trust me, I'm no saint - I will eat at times if I'm really stressed and its never healthy stuff - its usually salty/crunchy carbs.
Hey, nobody said the surgery was going to make us perfect, right??

I've always been a stress eater, and I'm also a tv watching evening eater. That's a pretty ugly combo. lol
I think the exercise idea works, but I'm not sure I'm gonna do that every time the problem/opportunity arises. I need that little guy to pop up and ask "are you really hungry?". It probably would be even better if he'd also give me crap about the choices I make.
