Keys to Success

well, a bunch of people have said that planning is the key (and i agree), but for me there have been two transformative things that stand out.

First is exercise - just MOVING.  I started before surgery with stretching and walking, continued that in the recovery process (which really helped in moving the gas and making recovery much easier), and have now figured out how to incorporate about 30 minutes of good workout into every day.  I can feel it and see it changing my body and the change in my energy level is just incredible.

Second is recognizing that what I'm dealing with is an addiction, not a "weakness."  Recognizing that and treating my addictions to sugar and refined carbs as any other addiction has made a huge difference in how I handle choices mentally and practically.  One book that helped with that was "Anatomy of a Food Addiction" by Anne Katherine.   I can't stress how beneficial reading that book has been in helping me understand how I gained the weight in the first place, and what I have to do mentally to figure out how to keep it off long-term.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the book recommendation, Karen!  I'm going to put that on my reading list. :)

I'd have to say exercise above all. I know I will not remain successful unless it's a part of my daily life.

and I have to add another. A free podcast from itunes called Inside Out Weight Loss. Brings my compulsive overeating into a whole new perspective

two things for me too...

PLAN! sundays I pack little baggies of cut up cheese, fruit, lean meat - make pudding (put it in little 1/2 cup containers), divide up string cheeses, make lunch meat roll ups etc. You can even go as far as to measure out protein powder so you can just dump and go. Whatever makes getting it along with you for the day easier.

and

the amazing support of friends and family - the friends that I have made because of this board and support groups are bonds that will never be broken! I know many of the people in person and talk to many of them weekly. Not to mention get togethers etc. Our families know eachother etc.

best of luck with your journey! Get involved here - I promise that it will be a huge help - remember no question is "stupid" one or many of us have been there and are happy to help!
