14 months out now, stuck where I was at 6 months out still, has anyone had this problem?

From looking at what you are eating... I agree with Liz... not enough calories and protein... but I also think maybe to many carbs...

You also need to step up the workouts... it sounds like your body has gotten used to walking that amount... so trying adding a 1/4 mile each week... or add hand weights when you are walking something different to change it up... and find a fun workout dvd to do at home... that way if you feel silly no one else will see hehehehe....

but don't give up... we all hit hard times... and we can work through them even if it does suck hard core lol...

Hi Donna,

I'm going to first apologize and then offer a bit of "tough love"... please take it in the positive spirit in which it's offered and don't be offended.

So here's what I hear in your posts in this thread.  You are avoiding both your surgeon and your nutritionist because you are 1. embarassed 2. don't want to hear what they have to tell you and 3. somehow don't believe they can help you through this.  You're saying, in essence, that you want to go it alone.  And yet, your track record is that going it alone isn't working for you.

Now... if you're embarassed, that means that you know you're not doing something they've told you that you need to do.  Otherwise, you'd be going to them and showing them that you ARE doing everything and it's still not working, and then working with them to come up with an alternate plan that will work for you.  We are all individuals, and what works for the majority of their patients may need to be adjusted for you - but if you don't trust them and work proactively with them, they won't know you're struggling OR be able to help you make the adjustments.

If you don't want to hear what they have to tell you, then spend a little time asking yourself WHY.  Have you reached a point in your weight loss where you need to address some body image issues because you're no longer able to hide behind the weight and be invisible?  (a VERY common thing)  Is there some hidden fear that's keeping you from wanting this?  Something that you haven't consciously admitted even to yourself?

If you don't think your surgeon and NUT can help you, then you need to find another surgeon and/or NUT, because that means you don't trust them.  They are the medical professionals that YOU HIRED AND PAID to help you through this.

Anyway, the ultimate answer may be more protein, less carbs, more water, different exercise, thyroid meds, whatever... but if your head isn't in the right place for dealing with this, and that includes addressing the depression, then your weight loss will continue to be a struggle.

Sorry for the bluntness, but I hope that it helps in some way.

Donna, I also experienced a major set back at 4 months until 7 months out. The changing point for me was to give up all starchy veggies and man made carbs.  Start to incorporate a wide variety of lean proteins and green leafy veggies.  Limit cheese to no more than 2 oz. in a day.  Avoid protein bars and shakes.  If you must have them, limit them to 1 a day and make sure the fat and carb level suites your program.  Your carbs should be in the same range as your fat.  For example, if your surgeon says no more than 11 grams of fat at a meal and no more than 42 in a day, the same rule should apply to your carbs.  Incorporate low or no fat dairy products into your routine and give up the oatmeal, pbj, and other high carb products.  Changing up your food routine will stimulate your digestion and metabolism.  Your meals should be spaced 2.5 hours apart.  Are you taking all your supplements?  Are you following the no more than 2 grams of sugar rule?

Some days your the dog and some days your the hydrant.

Good morning,  I was wondering if you could shed some light on what a man made carb is and also what the 2 grams of sugar rule is for me please.

Thanks

man made carbs are anything that does grow directly from the ground (corn, whole wheat etc) I am guessing. No breads, pastas, chips, crackers etc.

Our surgeons (Nan and I had our surgery at the same place and our programs are the same) limit us to 2 grams of sugar in a serving.

Man made carbs are anything that is not a fruit or veggie. If it isn't eaten in the form god made it, its not a natural carb. For example: Cereals are processed carbs (man made).

The 2 grams sugar rules is reading the ingredients labels on items and not eating anything with more than 2 grams of sugar per serving.  If an item does not list any type of sugar in the first five ingredients listed, it is deemed to be natural sugars.

Hi Donna - I live in Delaware County too - yeah, the extra skin is a pain - literally! You got a lot of good suggestions on keeping a food journal, maybe changing up your exercise, etc.

There is an excellent support group at Brinton Lake that is run by Crozer but open to anyone - the next one is Saturday, July 25 at 11:00 or 11:30 - I'll check to be sure. This session they are going to have a nutritionist there and I am definitely going. Sandy, another lady on these boards and from DE County goes as well - they also have a Wednesday night meeting once a month at the same place. If you go onto Crozer's website you can navigate around and find the dates and guest speakers they're going to have, but I definitely recommend going to the next possible one you can for the support. Its something we all need.

We all hit stalls - I've been stuck at the same weight for a while but I joined Curves 3 months ago and have actually lost 14 1/2 more inches overall (and 6 lbs) - even in places I never thought I could because of the loose skin.

Please don't give up on yourself or your surgery - it just sounds like you may need to make some small changes in your diet and/or exercise to get things moving again.

Kathy

There is no fee to attend the meetings and they welcome everyone and their stories and/or experiences - if someone is succeeding or needs help - Pat holds a very open forun. They usually have a guest speaker of some type but even if they don't Pat (I think that's her name) is always prepared with something interesting to discuss - usually has hand-outs of recipes, info on vitamins, etc. And she herself is a gastric bypass patient many years out and she works directly with Dr Katz of Crozer.

You won't feel out of place, trust me - the meetings are usually pretty full - before the post-op meeting there is a pre-op meeting for people considering WLS and that's usually pretty full, too. I'm 17 months out and haven't reached my original goal and yes it gets frustrating at times but I know its in my hands and within my ability and tool to get to goal. Sometimes the support mtgs can really be a motivator to get you kick-started again into high gear to get the scale moving again.

I looked at your profile and you look so familiar to me - I lived in Aston for 12 years and moved to Garnet Valley about 4 years ago - was very involved with the Chichester Crusaders for years (mostly in the 80's and early 90's). Have we met??
