Hi Abby - I can't say the same. I don't want anything at all and it takes a lot of effort just to make sure I get in the protein and liquids that my NUT requires.
What is your surgeons recommedations for incorporating real food ? So that my pouch will fully heal, my surgeon does not allow real food until at least 6 weeks out.

they told me at the hospital that my next stage of food would be anything that can fly or swim. im assuming its either fish or chicken. my doc will not do protein shakes at this stage. Lisa im sorry you are not feeling great,i felt very bloated 2 days ago so i can understand how your feeling. hang in there
it's head hunger Abby.. When u see Dr. S tomorrow, as long as everything looks good he will be putting you on solids. TAKE IT EASY with it. You will only be able to eat very small portions and chew chew chew chew chew. Try softer stuff..ricotta, greek yogurt, tuna, eggs might not sit well but that depends on the person.
Call me anytime with any questions.. I know you know that, but just wanted to remind you that I am always just a phone call away.

I was hungry. I don't know if it was head hunger or real hunger but I cried myself to sleep one night. The next day I wrote out all of my feelings cause I thought that this was the way is going to be forever. Once I started purees, I felt less hunger and now that I am on soft foods, I almost never feel hunger. I have 3 meals and 2 snacks all with protein and I am satisfied. It's too bad you can't do protein. It does satisfy hunger.
It is *most likely* head hunger. The nerves are cut during surgery so feeling "hungry" isn't much of a possibility - although others swear they had true hunger and I can't argue with how others were feeling.
For me, it wasn't so much head hunger about certain foods as it was the wanting to chew - the texture/mechanical aspect of it. I chewed on ice chips and that helped for the most part.
Hang in there!

Instead of complaining that the rosebush has thorns, be happy that the thorn bush has roses.

i have to second what Pam said... but also add that I was definitely experiencing withdrawal at that point from refined carbs and from sugar, both of which gave me significant "head hunger."
Some things that helped me a lot:
* Avoid TV like the plague, unless you have Tivo and can fast-forward through the commercials... and I'd also avoid watching movies like Babette's Feast and Chocolat ... haha
* If you can make yourself a shake of some kind, blend it (well) with ice cubes. The little "crunchies" of ice in the shake are things that you can chew and it's surprising how well you can defeat that mechanical feeling of missing something!
* If your doc doesn't allow protein shakes at this point (I can't remember if it was you who said that), you can still add high-protein components to your shakes, like blending greek yogurt (plain) with fruit or blending the greek yogurt into soups. Upping your protein intake a bit might help counteract some of those cravings.
* Avoid the routine things that you used to do that were always accompanied by snacking. change up the routine... if you were accustomed to snacking while reading a book in bed, read the book in the family room sitting up, instead... you're less likely to feel like you're missing something because other elements in the routine are already "broken."
Hope these help! it DOES get better! I'm actually shocked at this point that I'm having very few "cravings" and those that I have (mostly for soft white breads) are things I can divert or talk myself out of, or find healthier alternatives for that won't trigger my overeating behaviors.

Great advice Karen.. only one thing that I know is on Sawyna's NO NO list is fruit.
No fruit yet for her. He is adamate about NO carbs at all, natural or otherwise this early out. He wants protein, then fat, THEN carbs IF NECESSARY. I incorporated some good carbs in veggies after a few months once I started exercising so I would have fuel for the fire but I talked to him and he said it was ok as long as it was in veggies.
Ask lots of questions at your appointment tomorrow. That's what he is there for! He will tell you anything and everything.. just try to go prepared so you don't forget anything.
You're doing great so far!

I woke up from surgery hungry and stayed hungry till I hit full liquid. That first 3 oz. portion of cream soup really satisfied me. If you are already on full liquids, the next phase should take the edge off. Just be really careful not to advance to next stage without doctors approval. Keep your portions as small as possible and take it really slow to avoid an unexpected upheavel. It can be embarrassing as well as painful.
