MOM UPDATE

Okay, I'm not sure if I'm happy or not.  My mom broke her hip on Thursday, had surgery Friday afternoon, almost didn't make it out of surgery when her oxygen level fell to 61% and now the hospital has discharged her to a rehab facility already.  I just find this kind of fast for someone that went through so much just a few days ago.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad she's going to start her physical rehab and hopefully be on her way to walking again.  I'm just not real up to date on how well equipped a rehab facility is to deal with her other medical problems, such as her oxygen issue.  They still can't get her above 79% without the help of oxygen.  The crazy thing is that the hospital she was in said she should only be in rehab for 7-10 days.  That seems like an awful short time for someone that is 73 years old, weighs a briddle 112 pounds and has a long rod with screws holding her hip together.  Heck, originally the surgeon said it would be somewhere between 8-10 WEEKS!!!  I just don't get it.

Any way I choose to look at it, I think I'm going to have to accept the fact that it is what it is and that mom is probably going to need the use of a walker the rest of her life.  This is her second hip surgery in the last few years and she had a hard enough time walking around even before she broke it again this time.  I just wanted to thank everyone for their well wishes, prayers and concerns.  It means a lot to me and my family.  Thanks for letting me share.

Glad to hear she is able to start rehab. That will do her wonder. And they should be perfectly capable of taking care of her oxygen needs. Hopefully they will be open minded and fair about her progress and be open to having her there longer than 7-10 days if she needs it.

Hugs to your mom and you!

When life hands you lemons, ask for tequila & salt and give me a call!

Thank you for easing my mind.  I have no choice but to trust their professionalism.  They obviously are supposed to know what's best for the patient, I just expected her to be in the hospital a lot longer than four days.  It's a long road ahead.  Thanks for your concern.

Andy,
Hang in there. I know that you are concerned about the way your mom is kind of "rushed" out of the hospital and into the rehab facility but ask lots of questions and be her advocate to finding her the best care possible. You know what they say the more questions you ask the more answers you will get. I would be persistent and find all the information I can to make sure my mom was in good hand. Lots of prayers going out for your mom and your family.

People comment on my over 100 pound weight loss and attribute it to my WILLpower, but it is my WANTpower: I WANT to be thin and healthy more than anything else!

Thanks Shilpa.  We did look into the best possible care and there is a very reputable facility right near the hospital she was staying.  Unfortunately, it is a very popular place and finding a bed is next to impossible.  We did find a place fairly close by and, from all accounts, has a pretty good reputation.  Thanks for the continued prayers and thoughts.  Have a great day.

Actually Andy that timing sounds about right - and trust me, if she's not able to go home on her own they won't release her until she can. When my mom broke her hip she went from the ER to surgery - 3 or 4 days in the surgical side then over to skilled nursing for about another week or 10 days - she came home with a walker but was soon getting around on her own with a cane, which she still uses to this day. Her health was a tad better than your mom's at that point but your mom should be okay and believe me she'll be itching to get out of there a lot sooner than 10 days!! And they may send a visiting nurse to the house for a couple of weeks once she gets out - check her oxygen levels, blood pressure, meds, etc.

I know its hard sometimes but trust the doctors and specialists - they'll take good care of her.

Kathy, I am always glad to see you reply to my posts about my mom because you can so relate to what she and our family are going through.  I admit that, after reading your response, I do feel much better.  I don't know why in heck the surgeon originally told us 8-10 weeks.  Maybe HE was on anastethia at the time.  lol.  Oh well, time to get ready for a long road to recovery.  Now, only if we can convince her to quit smoking.  Yeah, right.  Now I'm dreaming.

Maybe she's living by one of your credos 'Quitting is not an option' - LOL!! Hey, my mom is on oxygen 24/7/365, has asthma, COPD and lung cancer, is receiving chemo for the cancer and is still smoking - its a losing battle...guess we all have our crutches and that is theirs. And my mom lives with us - doesn't have a lot of money because she only gets a small pension and some social security, but baby she always has money for those smokes!!

I ride my bike a lot - helps relieve some of my stress.

HI Andy, My prayers and thoughts are with you and your mom.  You know if you arent sure of things ask questions.  I always ask and have learned that some people will respond positively and others wont.  It is great that your mom is starting rehab but I do agree with your concerns about the oxygen.
The length of stay i believe varies with each person.  I am sure they try to get them moving quickly to prevent other issues from arising but I am sure to that they will reassess her fairly.
I have had had experience dealing with people  with hip surgery and having to use walkers and they do well with it.
Keep us up to date how things are going.

Andy,

They need to get her up and about before Pneumonia sets in.  Yes she probably will remain on oxygen for her comfort level and yes she will need the walker.  But these things are to avoid the struggle of trying to get around on her own and suffering.  If these things didn't make her more comfortable than being without them, they wouldn't put her through it.  Just be there for her.  You remain in my thoughts.

Nan
