MOM UPDATE
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad she's going to start her physical rehab and hopefully be on her way to walking again. I'm just not real up to date on how well equipped a rehab facility is to deal with her other medical problems, such as her oxygen issue. They still can't get her above 79% without the help of oxygen. The crazy thing is that the hospital she was in said she should only be in rehab for 7-10 days. That seems like an awful short time for someone that is 73 years old, weighs a briddle 112 pounds and has a long rod with screws holding her hip together. Heck, originally the surgeon said it would be somewhere between 8-10 WEEKS!!! I just don't get it.
Any way I choose to look at it, I think I'm going to have to accept the fact that it is what it is and that mom is probably going to need the use of a walker the rest of her life. This is her second hip surgery in the last few years and she had a hard enough time walking around even before she broke it again this time. I just wanted to thank everyone for their well wishes, prayers and concerns. It means a lot to me and my family. Thanks for letting me share.

Hugs to your mom and you!
When life hands you lemons, ask for tequila & salt and give me a call!

Hang in there. I know that you are concerned about the way your mom is kind of "rushed" out of the hospital and into the rehab facility but ask lots of questions and be her advocate to finding her the best care possible. You know what they say the more questions you ask the more answers you will get. I would be persistent and find all the information I can to make sure my mom was in good hand. Lots of prayers going out for your mom and your family.

I know its hard sometimes but trust the doctors and specialists - they'll take good care of her.

I ride my bike a lot - helps relieve some of my stress.
The length of stay i believe varies with each person. I am sure they try to get them moving quickly to prevent other issues from arising but I am sure to that they will reassess her fairly.
I have had had experience dealing with people with hip surgery and having to use walkers and they do well with it.
Keep us up to date how things are going.

Andy,
They need to get her up and about before Pneumonia sets in. Yes she probably will remain on oxygen for her comfort level and yes she will need the walker. But these things are to avoid the struggle of trying to get around on her own and suffering. If these things didn't make her more comfortable than being without them, they wouldn't put her through it. Just be there for her. You remain in my thoughts.
