Protein powders.....

Hi PA -
I know that this has probably been asked a million times......but does anyone know of a protein powder with a tolerable smell??  Yesterday I made a protein shake in the blender with Unjury strawberry sorbet powder and ended up throwing the whole blenderful down the sink.  The smell was so incredibly gross.....I couldn't even bear bringing it up to my mouth to drink it.  Thank goodness it was only a sample pack that I wasted.  Pre-op, I was thinking of buying a container of it.  So glad I didn't do that.

Smell seems to be my biggest problem since coming home.  I seem to be picking up on every little scent that comes my way and all scents are accentuated.  My Mom made me some homemade soup and put garlic in it.  The taste is great, but the smell is so nasty to me.  Any I have always loved the smell of garlic, onions, etc.

My taste buds are off too, since my tongue is still numb.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Lisa

Your tastes are going to be very sensitive right now. And a year from now, you may think that strawberry is the best thing ever.

It's very hard to pin point what will taste good to you now. I can tell you that I think the unflavored Unjury is really good. I don't think it has a taste, and it can be mixed with so many things.

But then again, you may pick up on a smell I don't. You are smart by only buying samples. They will be your best friend in the beginning. I literally spent HUNDREDS of dollars on powders that got wasted.

When life hands you lemons, ask for tequila & salt and give me a call!

The Chocolate Max protein from GNC is good. I liked the Nectars you can get at Barix - fuzzy navel and cappuccino were my favorites. I don't really do too well with protein powders - even still. Try and get your protein from greek yogurt and milk if you can until you are able to get onto solid foods. Also I believe GNC will give you your money back if you don't like them and have your receipt. Other then that - buys lots of sample packets - chances are by the time you find one you really like you won't need it anymore! lol

Good luck!

PS - chicken and beef broth are great sources of protein too!

Thanks girls.....I think this morning I am going to do a shake with a chocolate sample pack, skim milk and maybe a little bit of peanut butter.  And then put it in a cup with a lid !!

I bought the cutest little sippy cups for kids at Kmart.  Pastel colors with matching lids.  My Mom thought that was the funniest thing....hahaha

Well, Lisa, the Matrix choc is my favorite so far.  Really has no aftertaste or smell to me.  But as you're discovering, everyone's different.

My "standard" morning shake is either of the following:

choc/PB shake: 1/2 c. skim milk, about 1/2 **** cubes, 1 tbsp benefiber, 1 heaping scoop Matrix choc powder, 1 Tbsp EITHER Simply Jif peanut butter OR PB2 (for significantly lower fat)  - made with simpy jif it's 258 cal, 10g fat, 31g prot.  Made with PB2 it's 192 cal, 3g fat, 31g prot.  Both taste the same and have the same texture.

choc fruit shake:  1/2C skim milk, about 1/2 C ice cubes, 1tbsp benefiber, 1 heaping scoop Matrix choc powder, 1/2 banana OR 1/2 C frozen strawberries OR 1/2C frozen black cherries OR 1/2 C frozen peaches  (you get the idea)  (215 cal, 2g fat, 27.5g protein)

If I put in a few more ice cubes, the texture is like soft-serve ice cream when it comes out of the magic bullet.

Hope this helps a bit!

Karen, I don't know if this will help Lisa but it sure helped me with some new ideas - think I'll have a nice thick protein shake tonight!! I'm a plain-jane when it comes to making them - I like mixing the vanilla and chocolate matrix for a mocha type shake, but I like the idea of adding berries to the chocolate - that sounds yummy!!

Glad to help!  If the fruit is hard-frozen, it really helps to make the shake nice and thick.  When buying the frozen fruit, make sure it is no-added-sugar, though!

Enjoy!

Oh trust me, I only made that mistake once - with frozen pineapple. Can you say 'dumping'?? Yak! I didn't realize (at the time) that frozen fruits had added sugar - another lesson learned the hard way. I have fresh strawberries at home, tho, so I think that's what I'll be adding this time - I always added it to the vanilla for a strawberry shake which I love, but never thought about adding them to the chocolate matrix. Can't wait!!

Also, I am a coffee junkie. I drink SEVERAL cups per day. Every cup of coffe I make I put some Chocolate protein powder in and mix well. The coffee can't be real hot, but I don't like mine that way, anyways. I tastes kinda like a mocha and it give me a little extra protein in something I am going to drink anyways.

I'm a former coffee junkie....I weaned myself off though as per instructions from barix and came all the way down to decaf.  Decaf is just not that great - I'd rather not even have it.

I did order a tub of Click protein and was dissapointed that it was an espresso mocha with caffeine.  I'll keep it though - I'm sure I will eventually be able to use.  I see lots of people on the different board using it.
