I was wondering what goes on when you go for your two week checkup at Barix? I am having an issue and I am not going to be able to make my two week checkup this tuesday. I am going to call them tomorrow to let them know I cannot make my appt. However, I was wondering if whatever they do if my regular PCP can do that checkup for me. Like if they take blood maybe Dr. P can call and tell my PCP what to test for and all of that and have my PCP fax the results to them?? Anyone know?

Hey Dee,

I think we see one of the nutritionists at our followups, but I'm not sure what else they do.  Sorry I'm not too helpful.

It's a little fuzzy for me, but I'm pretty sure it was weight, blood work, blood pressure, detailed meeting with nutritionist *****viewed food logs and went over the next eating steps (and got a supplement to the barix bible), and a meeting with Dr. P (including checking my incisions) to discuss any questions I had and to answer her questions about activity, energy, etc.

My guess would be that they'd prefer for you to reschedule than to do it remotely, but that's just a guess.

OOh. Well my problem is I cannot afford to travel down that way anytime soon. I was going to borrow money but at this point everyone has been helping me and can not afford it either. So I was just going to def make it to my sixth week appt because that does give me enough time to save for the trip.

Well... I'd give Dr. P a call and explain the situation, then see what she recommends.  I'd be willing to bet she'll work with you on it some way.  Can you fax your food logs to the nutritionist, maybe?  Or have your PCP do it with the blood work so they know someone "official" has seen them?  Then you might be able to do the consult on the phone.  It's worth asking, definitely!

Good luck!

not to sound harsh or anything, but you just had major surgery and I would make it a priorty to get in for your 2 week appointment. You really need to be monitored by your surgeon. The NUT stuff you can do over the phone, but I wouldn't mess around if you can at all avoid it.

I'm sorry Dee but I have to agree with Melanie on this one - you went into this surgery knowing you would have follow up visits at 2 weeks, 6 weeks, then 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, and one  year. You should have planned in advance for the expense and time required to make these follow up appointments. You just underwent major surgery - and that is not something that your PCP is familiar with or probably truly understands. As much as I like my PCP (and I've been seeing him for almost 30 years) I would not have trusted him with my surgery follow-ups for any of my surgeries - RNY, knee replacements, etc. For those follow-ups you MUST see your surgeon - she is the only one who worked on your insides and knows what she did and what she needs to check for and look for.

I'm not being snide about this and I understand difficult financial issues, but this is one time when you really should put your pride aside, ask for the money and a ride and get in to see Dr P for your follow-up. And start planning now for your 6 week, 3 month, etc. You aren't going to do yourself justice by skipping these follow-ups, especially if you start having complications along the way - and its honestly not fair to Dr P either because you are her patient and she takes full responsibility in the care and treatment of her patients.
