Hi,

I'm new to the forum, though I do have to admit that i have been lurking for a few weeks. I guess the reason I'm responding, is that things are moving VERY fast for me, and I figured that I better post now or I will have had surgery and said nothing. I had my consult just two weeks ago and I'm already approved with my insurance I have already seen my cardiologist and have had my psych consult! I  just have to get my A1C test done because I'm diabetic.  Woo my head is spinning. While I been on this high speed train, I wanted to try and be informed so I have been reading posts etc. Well last night I was excited, now I'm really kind of scared.  I went on the failed surgery posts( I thought I should see this from all angles) Maybe I shouldn't have! I KNOW I have issues with food, How do I after the surgery  not fall back into those same patterns!?! I tried so many diets and failed what make this the thing that this will change my mind set? I so scard that I will fail this too? I'm feeing so many things I dont know what to think!

Help!

Hello and welcome!

All I can say is that you're going through the completely normal run of emotions... just in a bit of a compressed time period!  The good thing about that is that you won't have as much time to "stew" and worry before surgery.

Sounds like you're on the right track mentally, though, with making sure you're thinking about how to succeed long-term by addressing the WHY behind your current weight and food issues.  I found an absolutely life-changing book for me, which is helping me continue to work through those issues, is "Anatomy of a Food Addiction" by Anne Katherine.  (borders, amazon, etc.)  She tackles the physiological and psychological reasons behind why diets frequently fail for people like us, and includes great exercises for working through and addressing those issues.

The other thing that can really help is getting involved in a support community.  Making OH a part of your daily life is a great start.  Coming out to support group meetings is another way to reinforce that sense of community.  I don't think you said where your surgery is (or who your surgeon is), but all are welcome at the Barix meetings, even if your surgery is elsewhere... it's a phenomenal group of people and well worth the time commitment.  If those meetings aren't convenient for you, find something in your local area... even an OA (overeater's anonymous) meeting might be a good choice.  The key is enlisting an understanding community of supporters who can answer questions, be there for you, "talk you down," and help you reinforce positive behaviors.

Hope this helps!

Hi there - I'm a fresh post-op.  Just had my surgery on Tuesday.  I went thru all of the same feelings and read way to much on the "failed surgery" board too.  I had a moment or two in the hospital this week wondering what I just did to myself.  Now that I'm home, those feelings have gone away and I'm looking forward to my new life.

While I think that it is good to look at all angles, don't dwell on them.  I am constantly considering the fact that when people have problems, they come back to OH for help (as they should) and that there are so many other people out there living their lives to the fullest because they chose to be healthy.

I feel good today.  I feel like I can do this and be successful at it.  It's all in your attitude.  Work on making the lifestyle change in your head while you are waiting on surgery.

You can do it !

Lisa

Like Karen said, you're going through a normal range of emotions.  And support is extremely important!  I see that you're in Collegeville.  There's a support meeting at Phoenixville Hospital the first Wed. of the month, 7:00pm in the cafeteria.  Try to join us---lots of good people there.

I read the failed surgery posts too and they are scary. I like it here where it's more positive. LOL! But what you are feeling is normal from, HAVE I LOST MY MIND to MY WHOLE LIFE IS GOING TO CHANGE. We all have food issues or we would  not be here to begin with and we have to work on them as well as our physical bodies! I wish you good luck on your journey!

hey there and welcome. I too took the express train from consult to surgery, 6 weeks total, so I know the whole whirlwind feeling. Thankfully I never stumbled upon the "failed" pages whe I was pre-op and quite frankly at 10 months post op I really dont want to read them since I'm sure I'd be freaked out.

basically the deal is this surgery will give you a 18-24 month window to get yourself right with food and exercise. so my goal is to take my food addictions and turn them into exercise and healthy choices addictions.

best of luck with your upcoming surgery!

Welcome to the boards. I see that you have many emotions going on right now - which is normal.
I would suggest that you come to the next preop support group meeting at Barix. They are held on the second Tuesday of the month at 7:00. So the next meeting will be July 14th. You can learn alot at the meeting and ask about any issues that you may be having.
