Suddenly starting to feel weird about my surgery..

I am 3 weeks out and it is just now getting better.  It is a tough transition and a courageous one we all made to do this.

You have to be like a scientist and concoct what tastes good.  Soon, you will be eating food and getting protein from there.

Dee, I was having a really hard time too. I had bought the Nectars in Chocolate Truffle and Cappaccino and Any Whey.

Well, now that I've had surgery, the Nectars taste really proteiny to me and the Any Whey is just beyond gross to me. I called Susan from support group and she set me up with some Max Protein powders. They're very, very good and barely taste like protein - at least to me. She said you can get them at GNC, but only franchise stores, so if you're thinking about it, call around. I've been using chocolate in recipes with a chocolate or coffee base calling for Any Whey and vanilla in ones with fruit, etc. An extra bonus is that the Max Protein has 23grams a scoop, where Any Whey only has 17.

Hang in there honey! We're all going through the same thing. Just be strong and count down to pureed food time - that's what I've been doing.

You might look into the high protein yogurts. If you have a whole foods nearby they have the Skyr.is in the yogurt section and it's 15 grams of protein per 5oz.

Fage yogurt is also fairly high in protein. You can thin it out a little if you want and add some sugar free syrups to them.

What protein have you tried and not liked?

I have tried Nectar Strawberry Mousse, Matrix chocolate, AnyWhey Unflavored and I have two others I still have to try. I was using milk in them but I was have diarrehea from the milk. So i stopped using milk and tried them with water and fruit...still yuck! However, Dr. P said to try yogurt and I found Chobani Greek Yogurt plain and I added SF strawberry preserves to it and tastes good. This has 18grams for a whole cup but I am eating half serving at a time and that is 9 grams to a serving and I am eating yogurt for most of my meals and having soup for like two of my snacks to try and get in most of my protein. I did figure out if I had half serving for each of the 6 meals of this yogurt I would get in 54grams adn I need to get in 62 that is close however I am having my soup in between because I do not want to get sick of the yogurt and to have something else besides that. So I am still trying different things for shakes..but if I can get my protein in with this yogurt I am good until I get to puree stage LOL. I know its a goal to work up to and you are not going to make your goal right away so I am working on it. And I doing good with the yogurt and I tolerate it well.

It's good you're getting the yogurt. The Chobani is supposed to be good. I haven't tried it. I do like the plain with jam/preserves! :)

FWIW, the Matrix makes me ill even without milk so if that one made you sick with it, it doesn't surprise me. The Nectar's were great for me pre-op, but post the smell is too much and I can't stomach them as a result.

My favorite is 100% Gold Whey. I get it from Vitamin Shoppe. They have a great return policy if you try it and can't tolerate it. :)

Someone else suggested the protein bullets. I do heartily recommend them as well though they can be expensive to some. For me, I was drinking 2 a day in my lquid/soft stage and spending about $5/day on them, which I felt was still pretty cheap.

Pre-op I'd mix them with crystal ligh****er/lots of ice and that was a good way to get protein in all day long. Post-op I couldn't stand crystal light so ... I just drank them straight.

You might try these items, they have dairy in them but may not bother you like straight milk does.

Fabulous Ricotta Fluff Stuff

  • 1 large container of ricotta cheese
  • 1 box SF Jell-O instant cheesecake pudding
  • dollop or two of sour cream (to taste)
  • A little bit of milk to lighten it up (about a cup-add last and gradually)

Mix it all up and enjoy however you want it. I love it with strawberries! It's a great fruit dip or just eating straight out of the bowl.

Variation for fluff: Use whatever flavor of pudding you like and add a little milk to get the texture you like.

Fabulous Custard
Full of protein, easy on new post-ops, and delicious!

  • 3 cups milk
  • 3/4 cup Splenda
  • 4-5 eggs (depending on size)
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg (optional)
  • handful of coconut (optional)

Preheat oven to 375'. Beat eggs, nutmeg and vanilla together in baking dish. On the stove, bring the milk and Splenda just to a boil, then stir together to the eggs. Bake for 25 min

NOTE: when the milk is coming near to a boil, you'll get a little foam on the top. Remove this foam before stirring into the eggs, or it will get a weird texture on top.
