foot and leg cramps

Does anyone get cramps in their feet at night? The past couple of weeks I have be woken up with really bad cramps in my feet.
At first I blamed it on the new blood pressure med.-terazosin-which caused my feet to swell.  I told the Dr and he changed it to HCTZ which I have been taking for 2 weeks now. The swelling has stopped but the cramps are the same. As it is, I don't sleep much at night anyway and this is making me loose more sleep. I know I don't drink enough water or get enough protein. I'm going to try harder to get both . I've been eating 1/2 to 1 banana a day to see if that will help.

btw I had my surgery 1 1/2 yrs ago and am down 150lbs now. I love it!!!!! I walk by a store window and can't help but admire the person in the widow, surprised that it is me.

Thanks for any help
Kathy

Have your labs pulled....you might be pretty deficient in something like potassium or b vitamins...especially with the HCTZ...I don't believe that is a "potassium sparing diurectic" which means as it is getting rid of the swelling, it is getting rid of the potassium.  And although 1/2 a banana has SOME potassium...probably not enough...not even in a whole...so get the labs pulled and you might need to be put on a supplement.

Good luck!

Pam

Thanks Pam.
The last labs I had were in Jan. They were excellent.
I think I'll e-mail my Dr and see if he wants more blood work or just put me on a potassium supplement.
I also want to thank all of you for all the wonderful information everyday. I don't post much by I read every day. I've found out that everything I go thru or have or experience someone on this board has had the same thing. I thought I was the only one that sneezed when I ate too much or liked looking in the mirror now. Isn't it great to be able to give yourself a hug.
Yesterday for the first time, my husband picked me up. I don't ever remember being picked up and I was thrilled. The big WOWs are great, but so are the little wow's.
Thanks to all,
Kathy

Kathy - I was going to suggest bananas, OJ and LOTS of water! When I start to get dehydrated I get really bad foot and leg cramps.

I don't know anything about the meds but sounds like Pam had that angle covered anyway!

Hoping they go away soon!

Dehydration can cause swelling and cramping of the hands and feet.   You are also at the time when the B vites, if you have become deficient, would start showing up and that can cause cramping (like carpal tunnel) in extremities too.   It takes 12-18 mos. for them to leach out of your system so if you haven't been keeping up with your water, vites and proteins, symptoms of these might begin about now.    Also, make sure your bariatric surgeon reviews your bloodwork not just your PCP as they follow different guidelines.   My PCP gives me a gold star at every lab report, my surgeon gave me a supplement.  I was experiencing B vite deficiency w/neuro symptoms and it was very frustrating that my PCP didn't pick it up; I thought I had a brain tumor or something.

I had a bad problem with foot and calf cramps.  It turned out that my Magnesium was low.  That is something that my surgeon regularly checks.  I started a Mag supplement and the cramps have stopped.  I take prescription Mag-Ox.  I will caution you, though, not to take a Mag supplement without the supporting labs.  That is a mineral that is not water soluble.  It can built up in your body, like excess iron.

Regardless, your doctor should be able to help you get to the bottom of it.  Good luck!

I find that if I don't keep up my Calcium Citrate intake I get horrible "charley horses".

I also do a whole banana every morning with my Dutch Chocolate protein shake.

Good luck!
