support group - scaring newbies
Last night's post-op support group was great - lots of honest and open discussion about various "issues" being experienced by post-ops. We also had a group of PRE-ops participating, and I kep****ching some of their eyes getting bigger and bigger!
I just wanted to say to the newbies, based on the conversations a couple of us had afterward... DON'T WORRY!!! Every person's experience of this journey will be different! Many people go through this with no issues, problems, or complications. Don't let discussions like this scare you or sway you - we all need "venting" opportunities and sometimes that can be a little intimidating to watch.
It's kinda like when a group of women get together and one has just announced that she's pregnant for the first time. The "war stories" all come trotting out, with the result that by the end of the conversation, the poor pregnant woman is wondering how the human race has ever continued through the millenia!
Just felt the need to say that publicly...

Thank you Karen,
The post-op meeting is for post-ops although we're not against pre-ops coming but it has been mentioned that subjects discussed can be scary to the new ones. If you are a pre-op and something scary comes up don't hestitate to mention it or see me or someone, anyone. Don't let your fears fester and keep you from knowing all you should as you make your decision. Everything doesn't happen to Everyone, but things do happen and Everyone needs the information for the good. This new life is loaded with good. So always come forward without fear. The vets want you too, I want you too.

Personally I think it's good for pre-op's to see what real life is like. It can be scary but I haven't known many people who wouldn't want to know the realities of the situation prior to going into it.
The ones going to support groups pre-op are also the ones who will succeed in the long-run because they are taking an active interest in not only their surgery but the support of others in similar situations.
It's also important for a pre-op to see a variety of things, not only surgeries but lengths of time post-op.
I'm sorry I missed last night - it just wasn't in the cards for me to come. I really wish there was something closer.

I agree with everyone's post. The journey can be scary but at the same time very rewarding.I did not make the post op meeting but I can tell the pre ops any questions that you might have post ops are willing and most of the time able to help you.
It is not that scary.
What patient might experience might help anther like the issue Dennis had a little while back.Knowing what he went through sent me to the emercengy room but it turned out good .
Pre ops voice your concerns on OH and the post ops will try to answer them.

Karen,
I wasn't there but that is a good reminder as you and of course Dennis said. The meeting is for post ops and us post ops are MORE THAN HAPPY to have pre ops attend - but the info can be a little overwhelming.....
Hope all the newbies stick around!

Instead of complaining that the rosebush has thorns, be happy that the thorn bush has roses.
