Question for Clam lovers?????

OK - pre-surgery I loved steamed clams.  BUT - I have been afraid to eat them post-surgery as I've wondered if they would get stuck.  I'm two years out.  Has anyone eaten steamed clams post-surgery and did you have any problems?  I'm going on vacation next week and I know there will be lots of steamed clams on the menus.  I do realize I would have to eat them without the butter . . . and it will be missed . . . but I do love steamed clams . . . . I just don't want to experience one getting "stuck".
What do you think?
(note to those that don't eat steamed clams - they don't really "chew up" and pretty much get swallowed whole)

I too love steamed clams and am almost 16 months post op and have NOT been brave enough to try them. I have gotten scallops stuck and just this weekend got a piece of shrimp stuck, so I'm not a big fan of chewy seafood anymore!! I do miss clams, too - loved them, but not sure I loved them enough to risk it.

hmmm, great question and my thought would be that they would get stuck, since, as you say they are not real chewable, so unless you can chew something small enough, I'd say no on it.  I am 19 months post-op and still have stuck issues when I swallow something too soon, so that would be why my answer is No. . .  if you get brave enough to find out, let me know the results.  Enjoy the vacation!

I have had them and they slid on through but most things do with me.  I will say I began to "notice" them after about 4 so maybe they were piling up down there?  I also mixed in some shrimp and other scallops so it could have been the combo, don't know.   I've heard alot of folks can't do shrimp or scallops or squishy stuff.  I could live on shrimp and have never had issues.  I use smart balance or spray on I can't believe it's not butter, garlic and parsley and it's like the old days.

I was eating them as early as 6 months out! I am 2 1/2 years now and haven't had a problem with them. I do cut them in 1/2 - you could cut them smaller if it makes you more comfortable and chew the best you can! I admit - I sometimes indulge in the butter or use smart balance so that might lube them up enough to slide on through!

ps - I would get some and try them at home before you do on vacation - just in case!

Little neck clams would probably/no definitely be better.  They are so much smaller and less likely to get stuck.. mmmmmm.. now I want clams..But, I am WAAAYYY to early out to take that kind of risk.  I'll just wait and live vicariously through those of you who have done it.

Eileen,

I ate clams for the first time Memorial weekend.  I am only 6 months out.  We got the cherrystone ones.  ( the littlest ones).   THey worked for me.  I did chew, chew , dipped them in ****tail sauce not butter and they were delicious.!!!!!   The bigger ones got a little tough but I had my fill.

Good luck.

I love steamed clams, too, but have been too scared to try them.  I never chewed them pre surgery and don't think I would do a very good job of chewing them now.   I can eat shrimp, but only one or two.  They fill me up very quickly.

If you decide to give them a try, please post and let us know how you made out.  Enjoy your vacation!
