Hey everyone!! It's Suzanne and I am home from the hospital! Actually I got home yesterday. Surgery went great. I am feeling pretty good too. The only trouble i am having is some back pain. Did anyone else have pain in their back? It feels like it's strained??? Any help with that would be nice. I walked a lot yesterday, but was pretty exhausted. I am finding it hard to get all of my protein in. I think I might need to buy different products to make sure I get 60 grams in. I was a bit emotional after this---kept crying and thinking, what did I do to my body? But, I feel better today and have a brighter outlook. I need to get healthy!!

Glad to her you are home and doing well!!! I had some pain after surgery due to gas and all--but if it gets too bad you need to call your surgeon!!!

Protein and all that will come in good time--remember to sip sip sip and walk walk walk--but don't over do it either!!!!!!!!

Emotions and all that stuff is just part of the process but you seem to have a very good outlook and I am sure you are going to do fab!!!!

Feel better everyday and WELCOME TO THE LOSERS BENCH!!!!!

Much luv!!

Congratulations on taking such a wonderful big step to getting healthier!

Pain in the back and shoulders can easily be from the gas they pump into your abdomen (it rises as you're sitting up and walking)... my left shoulder was really hurting for about a week after surgery from it, but it does go away on its own.  However, if the pain gets WORSE or changes in its nature (dull to sharp), definitely contact your doc and ask!  Try hot compresses (heating pad) or a little massage to relieve it.

You're VERY early out to start  fretting about protein.  You'll get it in!  Yes, it's a good idea to try different products to find those that you like best, but as your incisions in your stomach and intestines shrink, you'll find it easier to get it all in.  If you've been reading the boards a lot, you'll know about things like Greek Yogurt, which you can add to soups and such to really boost both protein AND taste (use it like sour cream).  And you can get all creative with your protein shakes, adding a tbsp of low-sugar peanut butter (Simply Jif) to a choc protein shake made with skim milk boosts the protein to about 31 g per serving and is yummy!

Good luck and welcome to the losers bench!  Keep sipping!  and KEEP WALKING!  Push yourself to walk a little more and/or a little faster each day and you'll be feeling wonderful before you know it.

Thanks Liz! You are not far from me at all! I have friends that live in Northampton and Easton, we try to go there as much as we can. I saw that you hosted cooking classes and support groups, it sounds like fun and it is a heck of a lot closer than Danville!! I just might take you up on the offer when you have the next one. This whole experience is quite overwhelming for me. Just thinking about what I am going to be able to eat or not eat frightens me. I almost don't ever want to try sugar bc I don't want to dump!! It sounds like such a terrible experience that i don't even want to try!! Thanks for the invite!!

Well, I was extremely emotional in Pre-Op, I started crying and thinking I was doing something wrong. They had to give me something to calm me down. I was wheeled into surgery around 11:10 am (supposed to be at 10:30) I woke up in Recovery around 1:30. I reacted differently to the anethesia. I was whacked out of my skull all day and night. The woman next to me was sitting up in her bed watching movies and having conversations so I thought something was wrong with me!!! I just took the anesthesia completely differently. We were in recovery all day, they did not have any beds clean or ready. I was really pissed off and drugged up and was saying rude things to the nurses...here's is why. My bed became cleaned and ready at 10:00 pm!!! My parents were waiting to hear from my fiance all day, they never asked me if I had anyone waiting!! Up in your room, they want you walk as soon as possible, but I couldn't. I was sick, nauseous, and feeling like I was going to throw up. I couldn't function til the next morning. You are going to drink water, eat ice chips, jello, but most importantly, when they give you protein to drink, you have to drink it!!! The nurses were great and I was good to go when I was released Saturday morning. Walk Walk Walk and sip sip sip!!!

Glad to hear you're home and everything went well. You won't get all your proteins in for a while but try to make sure you get as much water and other fluids in to keep from dehydrating. It took all of us a while before we were hitting protein goals. Try a little more each day.

As for back pain I did have it but not until about 2 weeks after surgery - then my back started killing me - so bad that my husband had to help me from bed to the bathroom, which is all of about 10 steps! The surgeon said its because they cut thru the stomach muscles for the surgery so that puts additional strain and stress on your back. Thankfully it only lasted a few days but it was extremely painful during that time. If you're having pain already though it probably is from gas - walking will definitely help that. Don't be surprised if that pain doesn't move from your back up into your shoulders, too - that happens, but won't last long.

Exhausted is also normal - you and your body just went thru major surgery, so listen to it - walk when you can but also rest and let your body heal.

Take care and keep us posted on how you're doing.
