Does anyone regret having the gastric bypass?

I am about 3 months away from having the bypass, waiting on my insurance.

Does anyone had any regrets doing the bypass?

Long-term are you really restricted on the foods you can eat?

I appreciate the input.

thanks.

I am 19 1/2 mos out and don't regret it for a single millisecond!!  By far the best decision I have made for myself.  I did have one complication about 9 mos post op which was a bowel obstruction.  And even through that...never would have traded this "world" for the one I "left behind"

As far as "restriction" on foods you eat goes....well that depends on how you look at it.  Goals will always be the same...protein first, fruits and veggies second, carbs last if there is room.  Sugar should ALWAYS be avoided as should high fats.  Both can make you incredibly ill, plus it defeats the purpose of changing your lifestyle.  The surgery is a tool and in order for you to lose weight and MAINTAIN it, the tool must be worked.

The GREAT news is that almost every food I loved pre op I can enjoy in some healtheir version post op.  Liz is an awesome "recipie zaarr" and changes recipies around to be healthy and taste just as good as the original using simple substitution ingredients such as splenda, diabeti sweet, non fat yogurt, etc. etc. etc.

Good luck on your journey - and welcome to the boards!  We are a very close knit online (and some in real life) "family" of support.  Ask any questions you have!  Make sure you do all your research and read as much as you can on the subject!

That's a great question to ask pre op, but you have to be confident in your decision. I am only 3 weeks post op and struggling right now, but  I will say that I am still confident in my decision and my sugars have been normal for two days!!! I do know 1 or 2 people who have regretted but their surgeries were botched big time. Most of the people I know have not regretted it even those who have had problems or have  not met their goals. A

As far as long term restrictions on foods you can eat, you canot expect to go back to your normal pattern of eating hi calorie, fried, unhealthy foods or you'll gain your weight back. Set your mind for a life long change of healthier eating habits.

Ann,

Thank you, how long was it before you could return to work?  I have a desk job, what is reasonable?  How long before I can drive locally?

Thanks Ann.

I am 23 months out. 24 on July 10. I do NOT regret my decision in the least. I am a much happier generally healthier person than I was pre surgery. My health issues have nothing to do with my bypass or weight loss, that's why I say generally.

I am a very lucky, or unlicky depending on how you look at it, person. I can eat everything I ate prior to surgery. I do my best to stick to the protein guidelines and try to limit my carbs. However I do partake in sugar on occasion, but only if I am really craving it.

I dropped 110 pound and kept it all off until recently. I have gained a few pounds in the early weeks of this pregnancy, but think I probably lost them again already with this dang morning AKA all day sickness.

I had my surgery on a Tuesday, was home on Thursday, I was driving and ummm line dancing on Friday. It was my birthday and I wasn't sitting home for it!!!

I have never once had any regrets on this.It is the best gift one can give themselves.
I am a hair stylist & was back to work in 10 days.Standing all day was a bit rough but since I don't get any paid sick time I had to go back.I say take however much time you can get paid for.
Dr.P said I could drive when I was up to it.So you'll know when you're ready (as long as there's not pain killers involved lol)I was drving at 1 week out.Just to drive my kids to school.Good luck

No regrets here.  I just wish i would have started exercising earlier.  I am 15 months out and just really starting to exercise.  I have never felt better.  I am still having image problems.  Just ordered clothing from American eagle and thought about and xxl in shirts from there, well let me tell you i was pleased because they are sooo big I could have went to a size m.  WOW.  I have always been told by my parents, and teachers to never second guess yourself.  I apply that to all my decisions.  They have never left me down.  GOOD LUCK!

P.S.  was back to work in 3 weeks.  i build military vehicles.
