BICYCLE, BICYCLE...

I want to ride my BICYCLE, BICYCLE!! Yes folks, at 52 years of age my mom bought me a bicycle for my birthday! Its a Cruiser bike - no fancy gears or handbrakes, just a plain bicycle (and a pretty one!). We picked it up yesterday and I was extremely nervous about getting on it and riding it but I did pretty good! I haven't been on a bike in at least 30 years, maybe more, since I honestly can't remember the last time it was that I rode one.

After I had my WLS I started having dreams of riding a bike again - I don't know where they came from - maybe something in my subconscious was telling me that this was going to be one of my 'goals' after having surgery? Not sure - but whatever it was I was ready to get back on the bike and ride!

My neighbors knew I was getting the bike and they were outside when we got home, so very nervously I got on and started riding around our little cul-de-sac driveway area - my neighbor Tom is such a great guy - he adjusted the seat for me because it was way too low, and then got his air tank out and filled the tired properly, making it much easier to ride. After a couple of trial rides in the driveway I ventured out into our development and rode to the next neighbors' driveway. As the day wore on I got braver and braver and ended up taking 2 great rides by the end of the day - trust me, I didn't go miles or anything, but OMG the feeling of being able to ride a bike again - it was honestly undescribable.

This is one of the biggest WOW moments I've had on my journey - thanks for letting me ramble...

That is SOOO awesome! Way to go!!

I bought a 10 speed at a yard sale a few weeks back and am determined to get on it.  My friend has it in his garage so he can pump the tires and oil the chain.  Unfortunately, he has been a bit busy with his son's birthday party and his VERY pregnant wife.  Maybe I can get him to do it quick for me this week before the new baby comes.  I really want to get the bike home and try to ride it.

that is great .
Norm & I just bouht 18 speeds and darn if I know how to use all those gears. I just wanted a plain ordinary bike. I don't like the hand brakes you have to remember to press them both and I forget.
have fun

Kathy, that is fantastic.  You should be very proud of yourself.  I, too, fairly recently started riding a bike again and the feeling of the air hitting your face is indescribable.  My cousin had an 18 speed just getting old in his shed and he gave it to me a couple months back.  Initially it was for transportation purposes as my drivers license is suspended until NEXT June 10.  After a few rides I realized I was getting quite the workout - especially going up hills.  The burn in my thighs were similar to those I experienced when I was at the gym everyday.

Now, as I get ready for the annual July 4th 5K run, I will regularly bike 20-25 miles 3-4 times a week.  I've noticed it getting easier each time.  The best part of going up a hill is the coasting down the other side of it.  I think, knowing your determination, that you'll find yourself venturing outside your neighborhood soon enough.  Keep up the great work, you're an inspiration.

My husband (who is 70) said he's getting a bike so he can ride with me! He won't walk with me but said he'll ride a bike with me. I hope he does! He's in pretty good shape and health for his age and I know this would help keep him that way.

So get Jason out and get those bikes - its a wonderful feeling!
