surgury postponed

Boo Hiss!

My surgeon's office called today to change my surgery date.

When they originally scheduled it with me, they said that the surgeon would be on vacation the week immediately following my surgery.  Now, they said that he doesn't want to do any surgeries that week since he wouldn't be there to follow up it there were a problem.  I'm sure, it's all for the best...good that he wants to be there if I need him...but I'm so mad!

I was all ready to do liquid diet and I was getting everything in order...UG!

Now, I have to go through the Fourth of July...still worried to death about my gall bladder problem (which I was planning to have out when I have my bypass surgery).  At least I know that having the GB problem will mean that I'll watch what I'm eating and I won't gain any weight.  Just sucks!

I know, I'm not the first to have this happen!  I've read many of your stories about surgery even cancelled the same day as scheduled.  Now my date is July 20th - an entire month later.

The mean part of me thinks that I should be able to bump someone with surgery immediately after his vacation instead of having to wait until July 20th.

I also told them to contact me if they have a cancellation.  Maybe that will happen...who knows?  Did anyone actually get an earlier date because of a cancellation?

Thanks for letting me vent!
Pat

Go right ahead and scream and yell and stomp your feet - have a good old-fashioned hissy-fit. You deserve it. Then let it go and trust your surgeon's reasoning - it sounds like you already to. I was rescheduled the first day of my liquid diet - it was only for 2 weeks but I felt like laying down and kicking my feet and throwing a tantrum too - its just that you're so mentally prepared and then have everything change.

But you're going to do fine - heck, may even lose some more weight between now and then making the surgery(s) that much easier! So look at the bright side of things (after your tantrum, of course) and move on.

Hugs!! Kathy

You're absolutely right, Kathy.

I was just soooooooooo ready.

Not only will postponing mean that the surgeon is more easily accessable but...
    1)  my daughter can now participate in our church's Vacation Bible School
     2)  I'll now be able to visit & sight see with my in-laws that are coming to Pgh from NC.  They were to arrive the day I got home from the hospital, so lots of sight-seeing would have been doubtful.

and most importantly...
     3)  I was very disappointed that my eldest sister (pseudo-mother) was going to be away on her vacation on my original surgery date.  My husband will be with me, but it's just not the same as having your mom with you.  (My mom has Alzheimers and can't understand or remember anything I tell her about the surgery.  My sister is 16 years older & is my godmother.  We're very close.)  She has no plans for my new surgery date and will definately be there with me/us.

How's that for looking on the bright side?  I just also really want to kick and scream!  Thanks for understanding!

I'm also still holding out hope that there will be an earlier cancellation!

I like Kathy's response...yell and scream and kick your feet or however she put it.  But your original post AND your response to Kathy show that you are the bigger person in this and ARE looking at the bright side.  Congrats for that!

I too was a cancelled surgery.  Cancelled two weeks before and ended up getting scheduled for just about a month later.

Oh - and I agree - you should be able to bump someone else...but that is mean.

Congrats on hanging in there!

Thank you, Ladies!

I am definately trying to look at the bright side!

My hubby was even able to change his vacation to the new week (of 7/20).  So, it appears that we're all set up.  I assured him (my hubby) though, that if the date gets changed again, for any reason, I am going to yell, kick & scream !

I'm just hoping that I'll be ready to go back to work in August.  (Is anyone ever "ready" to go back to work?? Mentally, that is? )

Thank you all, again, for responding so kindly.

Yeah, thats a bummer.  I found out  less than 24 hours before my scheduled surgery that my surgery had to be rescheduled due to an insurance problem -  that was after 2 weeks of liquid diet ...I was a disappointed, unhappy camper...but I lived to tell the tale and one month and another - this time one week liquid diet later - I had surgery.

Best wishes to you,

Rhonda

Hi Pat!

Sorry that you got re-scheduled due to Dr Quinlan's vacation.  I am also with Pittsburgh Bariatrics, but am going with Dr Means.  I don't graduate until July 6th, so I am looking at an end of August surgery date.  Anyways, good luck to you and keep us posted!  At least you can delay the trek to St Margaret's with Route 28 N closed!  LOL

I was called...into my liquid diet...and told they needed to reschedule because my gall bladder had to come out as well and the doctor wouldn't have enough time. Only thing was, I already bought plane tiks for my son to stay with his dad for the following 2 weeks while I was recovering.  I absolutely insisted that I had to keep my appt and they needed to figure something else out. They did and I kept my regularly scheduled appt.  Whew!

Now, while being prepped for surgery, Dr. Boe stated there was a chance that the entire surgery could not be done that day depending upon how things go with the gallbladder.  I nearly cried and asked him to do the bypass first and worry about the gall bladder later.  (Obviously not how they do things.) In the end everything worked out beautifully. I kept my original date, my son was taken care of by someone other than myself and the entire surgery was completed.  Thank god!
